I purchased my 1st Vette (1996 C4) in September. Just noticed that the rear fiberglass leaf spring is splintering. I thought these were supposed to last the life of the vehicle? Has there been a recall? My car has 78,000 miles. Is it "normal" for these springs to splinter and need replacement? Are there any tricks to replacing it?......at first glance it doesn't look too difficult. Are replacement springs bettter than the original?
Thanks to anyone who has answers.

The fiberglass is coated. Agressive solvents or a torch flame from exhaust work can dissolve or burn that protective coating away.

My guess is that a previous owner or his mechanic somehow abused the spring, which is rather delicate when mistreated. A misplaced jack can ruin a spring. I have seen many high-mileage C4s with original springs still intact, so yes the spring is supposed to last the life of the car.

C4 rear spring

Thanks for info. Does the C5 spring replacement article pertain to a C4?

I'll replace the spring, any suggestions on where to get one?

harsh chemicals like wheel cleaner can cause this problem.

How bad is the delam.? If it's slight just watch it whenever you are under the car - take pictures.

My 96 had a slight delam when I got it. I'm convinced this condition is a lot more common that people know. The average owner is probably not under his/her car that much - checking the springs.

Post a pic or email me and I'll share what I know of this.

I'm close - Carlsbad - you could even swing by & I'll look at it.

I'm not a tech, but I'm hands on owner.

Does it look this bad?
