The guy who details my truck for me was looking at my 71, I was asking him to figure out how much he could do with it. All the panels except for the dashpad is in good shape, no cracks, just faded and worn. He suggested that I take them off and then spray them. I never thought to do it and not sure how it would of turn out.
Have any of you done this? What type of paint would I use?

Thanks

I'd suggest using the interior paint that's available from the parts vendors (Ecklers, Mid America, Zip, etc). That way your sure the color and finish will be as it should be.

In terms of advice when doing this.

1. Clean, then clean again, and clean another time.
The problem with 30 year old interior pieces is the amount of grime that been building up, especially if Armor All was used. That stuff is insane to remove and if you leave it there, you'll get "fisheye".

2. Spray many thin coats, don't try and cover it all in one shot.
The texture will be affected if you try and spread it too thick. Stick to thin coats, take your time and everything will look great.

I'd be interested in before and after pics. Can't wait to see it! :D

Sly.

Jon M thanks for the read, that was awesome.

My dash as a crack that runs throug the speaker holes, I wonder if that is repairable? I will be trying my door panels first, if I can fix the cracks on the armrests, I will save about $700.00

hello PPG paints makes an excellent interior paint. it can be bought in quart cans and mixed with a reducer/catalyst. you can redo the entire interior is so inclined..

I have attempted to repair cracks before with a pretty good result. (not perfect) What I have done was use fiberglass tape, (The kind they use for taping gypsum wallboard) I use this as a strengthening agent along with fiberglass resin. I put a small coat of the resin on the back of the crack, imbed the fiberglass tape into the resin, then put another coat of resin over the tape…let it dry overnight…then groove the crack out (on the good side) with a Dremel tool and use body filler to fill the crack. If you have screw holes…just cover them up and redrill the hole. I suggest if you are going to try this…practice on a piece you don’t need.

I have seen good results with the SEM products. FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS TO THE LETTER and it will come out just fine. I will be shooting min withing 2 weeks. My friend just did some panels on the inside of his Roadrunner and you cannot tell they are not factory.

I have just finished my interior with new gage's and painted ALL the part's in the interior, plus I put on a clear coat to help even it out.Paint was from Ecklers. I just posted 2 PICs in my album of the FOD.
