Now that my motor clean-up project is almost done - just waiting for the carb to come back from repair, and the interior work is almost done I need to start dealing with a problem with my starter.
I posted about it about a month or so ago but I hate to admit that even with all the suggestions and advice given back than I'm still clueless about starters and even how to begin to diagnose the problem.
I was thinking tonight that if they aren't too expensive maybe i'd be be better off just replacing my current troublesome one with a new starter and solenoid and be done with the problem for good. The current one is a replacement model anyway and the numbers are all wrong so no point trying to spend money rebuilding a unit that's not original and the rebuild would probably cost as much as a new one anyway.

My '65 TIM&JG calls for a Delco model 1107320 starter.
is this starter still made? If not, what would be a good replacement unit for me to get?
does the solenoid come with it or do I need to get that seperate and what model number do I need to ask for?
Any ideas on average cost?

Any issues I need to be aware of on removal and/or install of a new unit?

Lastly, am I nuts for thinking to just replace the old unit rather than trying to repair it?

The major chains like NAPA and AutoZone still carry remans of this starter. I had one in my car for years. Yeah, I know it's a reman.

What you may want to do is support your local businesses and make some phone calls to places that advertise alternator and starter repair (same electrical concept, different application). As I have found out with both alternators and starters, these places will have a back room full of perfectly good carcasses that they will rebuild for you for peanuts.

This is not rocket science, nor do you need to ship it out.

I don't know of any places out your way but I found my guys in the Yellow Pages. As I think of it now, I bought rebuilt, hi-torque correct starters for both the sb and bb for $100 each. I picked the cores out of a bunch sitting on the floor. They are now sitting on the shelf just in case. A hell of lot more satisfying than going to the JegsSummit catalog.

Get in touch with John Pirkle and be done with it. Pirklrsr@aol.com or

I know he did alternators, didn't know he did starters also.
In either case, he would be the man to contact if my starter was original model and proper date coding but that's not the situation I have and I'm not currently concerned about putting a proper numbers and correctly dated unit in at this time (mostly because of the $$$).
I just need something that works.

thanks for the info though and I'll file his phone number and email for future reference :beer

Kid, if NAPA and Autozone sell reman units, that wouldn't it be the same as me just having mine rebuilt?? either way it's not a new unit.

I guess I need to pull mine off first and see what it is.
If it's a Delco unit but just the wrong model number than I guess it would be worth at least calling around and getting quotes on rebuilding it afterall. I just figured a rebuild would have been about the same price as a new one in which case I might as well go for a new one. If rebuilding is a lot less expensive than I'll go that route.

Thanks! :)

I assumed that you needed a starter now.

I have no idea what a "correct" reman'd corvette starter, in a box, goes for. I'd be interested to know if you find out.

FWIW, with the parts that I buy from my alternator/starter guy, I can rebuild an original alternator and upgrade it to 100A for about $70. Starters are just as simple to rebuild...some bushings, new solenoid and possibly some bolts. If you have a small shop press, you may want to give it a try.

good luck

nah, waiting a week or two wouldn't be that big of a deal. Car isn't leaving the garage for another month or so anyway and that's just to take it back to the bodyshop.
don't have a shop press so i'll have to outsource the work if I go the rebuild route rather than a new unit.
i'll have to look what kind of starter is on the car and start making some calls today I guess.

Barry,

thought you were "semi-serious" about "number matching" (VBG) - check with Pirkle and you may be surprised at the price if he has one! now, if you only want one to drive, then check your local NAPA, etc. and buy one from them, if #s don't matter - will be probably cheaper than rebuild!

Rick, that's correct. the semi-seriousness part works like this. when I can afford to go "correct" I do. When I can't i don't.
right now I just need a starter that works.
later on I can get hold of a "correct" one when I have the money to do it. Since I don't go thru judging the numbers thing is just for my own satisfaction as I've mentioned before. Right now i'll be satisfied to have a working starter. Later on when the money is available I'll change it out to the correct one. I do hate having to spend twice doing it this way but sometimes life is like that.
