Starter problems when Hot

my 65 is having problems starting hot. probably the solinoid.
I understand this is common on the mid-years becasue of the excessive heat.
Anyway I'm going to install a new starter/solinoid any reccomendations. Bosch, ACdelco or?
Any body have any preferances. How long should they last?

I had the heatsoak problem with my former 1979. Very annoying. I purchased a GM high-torque mini-starter and the problem went away. Mind you that is an expensive solution.

There are other ways of doing it such as using a remote solenoid (as in Ford) and changing the spring in the solenoid. I can't recall the details on those approaches.

Or for $20.00 or so you can try the Moroso heatshield seen in this pic.

My car was dropping 2 or 3 (rebuilt)starter and (new)solenoid assemblies a year - under lifetime warranty from Oreilly.

On Power Tour last year I talked to an Oreilly rep, who told me there are two kinds of solenoids: english (larger), and metric(smaller). He ordered up a starter with the larger solenoid and english threads on the posts for me from a Texas store (free of charge). Problem gone.

PS - My car has A-C and the temps under the hood can melt the plastic loom off the harnesses, as they did on that Power Tour with 100F plus temps as we started in Texas.

I had the same problem with my '78 Silver Anniversary. The starter heat-shield was missing- as soon as that area cooled down- no problemo. This may be a cheap and easy fix for you to start off with.

There are quite a few similar post here about starter heat problems. I would recommend going though these.

I had the same problem with my BB car. 1st I would use a AC Delco starter from for a BB ( additional insulation) I went though a couple of Autozone's even they were free - it's the aggarvation of waiting for the starter to cool down. Since intalling the AC Delco this has elimated 90% of the problem. I a have a heat shield that does some good - but they are small and cannot deflect alot of heat.

I used to have a '66 with a 327/350 and I was going starters on a regular basis. The high comp. engines are very hard on starters when they are hot (shortly after shutdown). I finally took it to a starter/alternator shop and had them rebuild to a heavy duty starter and the last 10 years I had it I had no problems. It's also cheaper than the fancy HD ones.

You can go with a remote solenoid and solve the heat problem. Summit and Jegs sell an inexpensive kit. This solved a similar problem in my 65. Two years and no problem.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll probably try the heat shield 1st. Then I'll look into doing the remote solinoid.
