Hey guys, I am trying to clean up some of the wiring on the '74. I want to replace some of the cobbed up add ons that have been added or changed over the years.

On the starter the wiring diagram calls for a yellow wire to go from the r post of the starter to the coil + (mine is red at this time). The other side has a red wire soldered to two black wires. The wiring diagram shows nothing like this. Can anyone please supply the proper wiring at the starter.

Thanks for any help. peace Bud :cool

I dunno about the color & count of wires ... but these two simple tests may help get to the bottom of it:

(1) Measure voltage at COIL + when cranking only ... record.

(2) Measure voltage at COIL + when running ... record.

I'm not sure about a '74 ... but I'm thinking 70's breaker-point systems should have a resistance wire to COIL + that provides less than 12V (6-9V) when running ... and 12-13V during cranking only.

You should have a 12-ga. purple wire at the "S" terminal (energizes the starter), a 20-ga. yellow wire on the "R" terminal (coil bypass - feeds 12 volts to the coil + only when cranking), and a 12-ga. red wire (main power feed for the car) on the big stud with the (+) battery cable.
