Starting Problems

Hello Everyone,
I have a 1977 with a new remanufactured engine with a new fly wheel, due to health reasons I have not driven the car very much since the new engine. Hence the warranty has expired , the issue I'm having is a problem with starting the car. When cold the car will start right up , after driving for a few miles and stopping, the engine will barely turn over even with a new battery. When working correctly.

The drive shaft of the starter motor spins but will not engage the fly wheel( no shims are being used) I have changed out the starter motor but still the same problem. The engine when running has plenty of power and runs well. I cannot understand why the startor motor gear engages when cold but not hot, after I keep trying to start the engine with this happening the starter motor will not engage the fly wheel even cold and has sat for days it just keeps spining.

Due to this issue of unrelability I no longer drive the car , after spending for a new engine and having my transmission rebuilt. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you may have the timing too far advanced. Get someone to put a timing light on it and make sure the timing is set correctly. Once it is set correctly it should start right up regardless if it's cold or hot. This may not turn out to be your problem but it's a good start point. It also sounds like you have a bad soleniod in your starter as well. You say that you changed your starter and still have the same problem, are you sure that you replaced it with a reliable unit. It's not impossible to get a bad rebuilt unit, can you get it bench tested? If you replaced it with one from a junk yard there's a good possibility that it's bad. Good luck , hope this helps.

When you replaced the starter motor, did you replace the starter solenoid? If the starter turns over, but doesn't engage the flywheel, it could be a bad solenoid

Wouldn't hurt to test the batt cables. If you have access to a voltmeter with aligator clips. If you put the meter across the pos cable ends and crank the(try to crank) engine over, you shouldn't read hardly any voltage. I mean like less than half a volt. In theory 0 volts. Then do the same for the neg cable. Using the ohmeter will not be accurate. Best of luck.

Keep in mind that starter you replaced may be bad like C3forme stated. Remind me of when i tuned mine (Pugs, wires, cap, & rotor) and she started missing badly. Turned out to be a bad spark plug. That was a first for me....

Thinking about it now this is the third starter motor , that I have tried to resolve this issue with . I have been stranded a number of times, one time the vette was towed home 125 miles.
