I'm in the process of rebuilding my steering column. Does anyone know where I can get (preferably rent) the special tools required for this job. The chassis service manual lists them as J-2**** parts numbers (there are several). I assume this was a GM deal tools number.

Any suggestions. I hate to have to buy them for this one job but if I have to I will (if I knew where :) )

If that is a steering wheel puller, AutoZone will rent you one for free. Most manuals will tell you its a tool # bla bla bla when its a damn hammer or something else that easily obtainable. I know with my column I only needed a wheel puller.

The wheel puller I didn't even need but I know what you mean.

I'm getting a bit depper into the column and tearing it down 100%. These are the tools they say you need to pull the pivot pin for the tilt tele mechanism. There is another tool used to pull another spring once you get down into the tilt mechanism.

I suppose you could hammer out the pin but it looks pretty solid.

You can purchase the tool for removing the pivot pin from Pep Boys for under $10.00. It is a speciality tool they stock as it's used on all GM tilt wheels. Fred
