C2 steering column end play

Hi, I have an issue with the steering wheel/column on my 66. The steering wheel has a lot of vertical end play. I can move it up and down while driving or just sitting. There is no side to side slop, just vertical. The steering column housing below the turn signal lever is not loose, so I suspect the bearing on the outer part of the column closest to the driver. What is your suggestion as to the repair? what parts would be needed? Does the steering column have to be removed? Non telescopic. I havent torn into this yet, pending some professional advice. Thanks for your help, Vinny

If I remember right, you can replace just the upper bearing without column removal. You will have to remove the wheel/hub and turnsignal sw. etc.

Bearing is about $22 at Volunteer Vet Parts. Part number ST28.

Thank you for the info. I'll open it up this weekend and make sure I dont need anything else. I'll give vol. vette a call. vinny
