Strange dash issues

Hi all.

My father just bought an 87 coupe that has digital dash issues. The speedometer and tach are OK, however the rest of it (fuel info, temps, etc.) lights up entirely so it's just garbage information. Also, when you turn the headlights on, the entire dash goes out instead of just dimming. He's tried the fuses and cleaning all the connections, but nothing is helping.

I'm worried that replacing the digital dash won't fix the problem. Any thoughts?

Thats a digital cluster....everything that can go wrong or has gone wrong IS IN that cluster. Replacing the cluster or rebuilding is the proper repair.

You can locate the local rebuilder thru your neighborhood Corvette store or club and send it off with a money order for $350 and get it back within 10 days or less. You can still drive the car without the cluster.

These are FRAGILE. The LCD panels are easy to damage and the circuit boards have certain weaknesses that are well known. Some common faults are so common that there are DIY proceedures for those brave enough to disassemble a chunk of fragile electrical hardware.

If you do not have a local contact for rebuilding see the catalog stores, ecklers, madvet, corvette amercia. They all offer the service. I have to pull my 87 cluster out again and solder the same broken ground path on the main board that I've done 5 times...I think this time I'm going to solder a wire around the break instead of trying to repair the broken pin/solder joint.

I printed out the tips and we'll try it all! If it doesn't work we'll go the rebuild route. Thanks so much for your replies!
