Ok after reading much of the threads about stub axle wear I belive I have a real odd problem!! Today ,,,well actually this morning I finally got to the innards of my diff.. As far as I can tell the stub axles look real good but the center pin for the sider gears has grooves wore in it from the ends of the stub axles!! well any way the stubs still have the little buttons on the end of them and they look ok to me.Im kinda shocked to see the pin wore like it is. isnt it supposed to be of a harder material? And can I get the ends of my stub axles cherry red and quench them in oil? will that make the ends harder? sorry bout bein long winded on this but this kinda made me worry.

You stub axles are aftermarket repaired items, as far as I know. The buttons are much much harder than the cross pin. Possibly Bubba was too cheap to fix it last time he was inside your diff.

Put in a new pin and be done with it.

I went ahead and ordered a new pin from one of the vendors.I have a question though, will synthetic gear lube help keep the wear down or should I get some of that lucas addative and run 90 w 140 lube?
