does the shifter knob on a 4 speed '69 just twist off? i've been trying and it won't move. I'm honestly worried I might break the shifter handle.

Yes, it should unscrew. Mine was a little tight, but it finally came loose.

The one on my 71 Auto was a major pain. Turned out it had teflon tape helping to hold it:eyerole. I grabbed it with one of those flat round rubber circles that you use to open tight jar lids - spun right off.

It does in fact screw off counter clockwise. The knob has a tendency to rotate with wear and time.I glued mine so it would stay straight.Possibly someone did the same to yours?

since mine was very old and looked it, (and i was replacing it and had the replacement in hand), i had to resort to using a pipe wrench on mine to "break" it free. i tried all the above tricks first with no luck. even let it sit in a bit of WD40 and after that, rustbuster, but not luck. pipe wrench worked right away, however, lol!!
