Super 40 on a 76 with a L-82?

So i have an exhaust on my car, that was suggested to me, but i dont like it. It has a "popping" sound and although some people like it, I do not. It sounds like a glass pack that u hear on trucks. I have been looking at different exhausts and thought the Flowmaster Super 40 should sound perfect.

I had a chambered exhaust (the mid america designs chambered exhaust) on my corvette before this one and loved the sound. i love the MUSCLE sound with the deep tone. But I also did realize that the chambered exhaust is somewhat illegal because it wasnt really a muffler.

Does anyone have the Super 40 on thier vette (mine is a L-82 1976)? Do you like it? Does anyone have any other suggestions/alternatives?

Mine came with Flowmasters I think - does it say super 40 on the muffler itself?

Well, they are Flowmasters and they look like the 2.5" Super 40. I looked them over real well and found no evidence of a part number or Super 40. I don't know how old they are but I am guessing they have been on there since the late 80's or earlier. The whole exhaust system was welded and I believe that is required in North Carolina. From what I know it left NC in the late 80's.

They are behind an L48 and after the catalytic converter. They make the stock L48 sound really good. Not too loud but authoritative.

They fit real nice under the back. They are close to the spare cover but I think that is due to the pipes. Right now they are out of the car as I am debugging an engine problem (thought the catalytic converter was partially blocked). I'll see if I have any pics from before I removed them

I get popping out of my 40 series flowies but then again my engine isnt exactly stock.....thinking about switching to 50 series to tone her down...kinda splatty sounding....

mine isnt quite stock either. i get the same effect. I am trying to avoid getting that splatty sound. right now i have a flo pro's, they are "what the street rodder's use" but i dont totally care for them. they have the popping sound. Does anyone why it makes that popping/splatty sound that i can find a muffler that doesnt have that sound?

I have Hooker Headers/Sidepipes. They're moderatly pricy, but If you like sidepipes, they sound great! No splatty sounds, just a deep, loud rumble.

I finally hit pay dirt on the part numbers. I found 42441 on the back of the mufflers as I was reinstalling the exhaust. It is still a valid part number for Flowmaster for the "standard" 40 series: http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/products/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=3286

Even with the catalytic converter restriction removed the car still sounds good at idle and cruising speeds. I can't open it up yet - there is still some problem with the engine where it starts breaking up under power around 3000 RPMs.

L48 - so do you think that you would switch mufflers when u get the opportunity? Mine are at the point where i will be switching. or do you feel that you like yours enough to keep it? I am asking cause im considering the super 40s or the 50s OR going to the hooker side exhaust below.. (although i dont know if its legal in my state (minnesota)).

zachh - is your hooker sidepipes the all-one-piece Hooker Super Competition Side Exhaust (headers and mufflers) (headers attached to the sidepipes) like below? I see this one at mad for $1,299.99. It says it has a temporary shortage tho.

On another note.. anyone know if these are legal in the state of minnesota? (or how illegal they are?)

Unless I decide to go completely stock I will be keeping these mufflers. They sound great to me. They are expensive - I would never have bought them on my own, but now that I own some, I would consider buying more of them for other cars.

I do like side pipes but yikes they are expensive, and I am pretty sure they will be louder than the mufflers I have. If nothing else the exhaust comes out at the back of the door instead of behind the car. Are you running cast iron manifolds? You can also get side pipes from the manifolds and I bet they are a lot cheaper.

I have nothing against the header/side pipes - they look great! Its just more money than I would want to spend.

Ummm. Sidepipes!! I had them on a '73 Ranchero. Miss that thing!! That and the Vette along with one or two others are the few cars that look good with them.

Do the Hookers come in black!

I have chambered exhaust on my 69 rebuilt 350. Sound incredibly strong, but it does make a pop-pop-pop sound upon deceleration, or downshifting. In reading a previous post from Evo, I understand that some of this could possibly be reduced... so I will install an h-pipe (Summit) to help reduce some of that popping (... is that called resonance?).

My 72 Camaro has strong running 350, but use the Flowmaster 40s... now, this car sounds nice.... deep and powerful growl and surprsingly loud w/WOT.... what's nice is that alhtough the popping sound is also there... it's barely audible... that's great.

I have Delta 50's on my '81. The sound is awesome and the muffler is slightly smaller than regular Flows and installed they look almost stock. The popping sound is from the inbalance in pipe lengths if one has converted to true dual exhausts (and does not have an H-Pipe installed). An H-pipe will correct a lot of this, BUT...... be carefule WHERE the H pipe is placed. Too close or too far back from the engine will alter the torque curve. Have a competant exhaust shop do this work.

I also bought mine at Mid america. Mine are exactly the same. They come with everything you need to put them on. They are two pieces, the pipes, and the headers. From where the 4 pipes combine into one, to the engine is one piece. They aren't hard to put on, just time consuming. It helps to have an extra set of hands to put the headers on. Im not sure how illegal they are, they dont have the converter. The mufflers go into the sidepipe before you bolt them up. Cops dont bug ya, They sound great, rough idle sound (loud) loud accel, and moderate criuse. They make the car look BAD! Mine were on back order for about 2 months, but the plant they're made at was hurt in a storm. They are worth the wait. thanks zachh.. i am going to get sidepipes.. its the most logical choice to solve the sound issue and they look great... it looks like ur running yours without covers.. which is what id do since they are more than the pipes themselves (the nice ones anyway).. any other problems besides ppl burnin their legs once in awhile? i think im going to buy mine from mad also.. btw.. which mufflers came with them?

Im not sure what kind of mufflers they are. All I know is that they're loud! I think that they are reverse flow? Im not exactly sure.
