Just got back from downtown Chicago in the vette, and what a beautiful day to drive. But as usual, while cruising, minding my business, one of those new Cadillac SUVs come behind me, moves over the takes off. I think it was the one that is in the commercial with the passengers holding their arms out of the window. Now I now the vette will embarrass him so I held back the horses and let him delude himself. So as traffic allowed me to catch him, I pulled in front of him, stabbed the gas and showed him what serious accelleration was about. After that he stayed around the legal speed limit. This is not the first time that a SUV has challenged me, there have been those Escalades also, with the 345hp motor. Now they think really think that they can run with the vettes, until you put a few manuvers in the mix, then they realize that the crap that they heard in the commercial does not apply when they encounter a sports car. Hopefully they will learn to challenge other SUVs and leave the real driving to those that have the right equipment. In the future I wont waste my gas.

That kind of driving in a busy metro area will get you in trouble sooner or later. Why not just take the "high road" and let him make a fool of himself by thinking he can take you?
Sometimes "cool" is NOT doing something you know you can. Most of the surrounding drivers know which vehicle has it and which doesn't. And most will respect you for being restrained.
Your plan for the future is the way to go IMHO.

I agree with ya tnovot, but what really cracks me up is when a ricer with a fart pipe wants to challenge me. ;LOL I just smile and go on my merry way. :D

TNOVOT is right, That wasent what I would call an ADULT thing to do!!! I know that I am older than some or maybe most of the forum members, BUT,To me, NOTHING says A--HOLE like a (sports car JOCKEY) TRYING to impress HIMSELF!!!!! If you are hell-bent on trying to impress someone, and prove how fast (or to some of us,how SLOW) your car REALLY IS, take to the track, where at least WHEN you screw up,Hopefully, nothing other than your pride will be HURT!!!! Happy Motoring!!!!!!:D

"In the future I wont waste my gas"

Now, THERE"S an idea!

I've never felt I had to prove my Vette's capability to anyone. I have, on rare occasion, surprised some motorbikes, but never even glance at Ricers or Rustangs.

I think most people are concerned only with getting from point a to point b, not trying to outrace sports cars, especially if they are driving a truck. Most people are too busy to race. Seems a little childish to assume that everyone wants to race with you.

Being from the Chicagoland area myself... I feel your pain (all non Chicago-ans need to understand that those of us who are privaleged enough to live in this great city also live here with an attitude). Anyhow, When I have the pleasure of taking out my vette... I note that everyone stares. When I pull up to the stop light and she shakes and rumbles, or get door to door on the xpressway with someone... they cannot help but look over. My vette is loud enough(at idle or WOT), and has enough displacement that nothing further needs to be done/said. For example, it can be sitting in the parking lot taking a nap, and people get it. HOWEVER, this has never once stopped me from flogging the beast in her arse... just for fun!! :J Who cares!! There is nothing like the lub lub lub of a 454 with side pipes and a good cam. If you want to flog your girl... go right ahead. The Corvette was not designed for some loser to putter around in. I SAY DRIVE!! If a ricer ****es you off, VENT!

BTW... nice comment about the fart pipe who ever said that!

DAMN IT DRAGS .... I got ya by a year!!!! ;LOL ;LOL ;LOL ;LOL

I was in afriend's Ferrari 360 and a BMW X5 4x4 challenged us, what a joke.

I've had my Callaway challenged by cars that couldn't get out of their own way, let alone anything else.

Basically there are a lot of idiots on the roads...:)

Very true, however, the only thing I would add to that is the phrase "non-driving" in front of the word idiots.;)

Agreed. I think MOST vette owners have what I call a "go fast" personality. It can be good AND bad. However, these personalities usually do not go out to the golf course to lay up. We will go for the green almost every time.

Agreed !!

It is more fun to just smile and let them take off (and find the speed trap ahead).
I can't see any reason to go racing an SUV though ?

:upthumbs No sense in owning a Vette, or any sports or fast car if your not gonna kick it around now and then. Who hasn't felt a little frisky on a nice spring day and nailed it occasionally?

Age is a state of mind for a lot of us, Drive it! Have Fun! Be Safe!.

I agree that there is a time and a place for everything. However, there is something that happens when a "normal" human being gets behind the steering wheel of an SUV (Stupid Ugly Vehicle), or 4X4 Pickup truck, that makes them THINK they are God!

They become the most arrogant, irritating, aggressive and DANGEROUS drivers on the road.....and there are times when they DO need to be taught a lesson in humility.

Anytime one of these morons comes up on my butt, acting all big and bad when I'm on an on ramp or off ramp, I simply increase my speed until the jerk behind me learns a valuable lesson about the physics of inertia and angular momentum, and nearly loses it in their vain attempts to keep up with me.

Anytime one of these morons comes up next to me at a traffic light in a lane that ends 100' up the roadway and thinks they are going to gun it and actually cut me off as if I was in some gutless Toyota corolla, they learn an equally valuable lesson about when it would be a good time to give it up and realize their lane has just ended and they have nowhere to go.

AND, anytime I am maintaining a "reasonable" distance behind the vehicle in front of me in heavy traffic, and one of these morons whips out from behind me with the sole intention of cutting back in front of me simply to gain all of ONE FREAKING CAR LENGTH, I always seem to get the sudden urge to read what the bumber sticker says on the car in front of me, and of course, "accidentally" thwarting the idiotic attempted maneuver by the Stupid Ugly Vehicle driver in the process!

I don't offer any apologies whatsoever, either. I will not allow myself to be "bullied around", regardless if these idiots think they are God in a 4 1/2 ton modified Brinks truck, or not

I will have to also agree with everyone here about the audacity of certain people while they are operating a motor driven vehicle. Stupid kids from high school driving their Hondas and Toyotas that think that just because they have their liscence that they have the experience necessary to operate a car. A kid will never be able to have the proficiency of an adult driver whom has had decades of experience and maybe even specialized training in the operation of a vehicle. My father (in his 50's) totally scares the hell out of me when he drives in his company car (Ford Windstar) he is an extremely aggresive driver and has no concerns about what happens to the car. He usually passes by accelerating quickly and turning within inches of hitting the car in front of him. He is not always like this (takes Paxil) and does show the proper respect to other smaller and more respectable cars. His problem is only in not being able to tolerate drivers who totally disragard the laws governing the operation of vehicles and the other people who are attempting to abide by these rules.

Most of the cage drivers in my town feel that if they are following you and you put your signal on to change lanes it is there duty to pass you before you make your lane change. They don't need gas peddles--just on -off switches and new brakes every 7,000 miles. I've seen Chi-town cabbies that could take driving lessons from some of these dweebs. The squating launch and chirping tires can thwart these mindless fools, most of the time without even breaking the speed limit. And then there is the ( I can blast that yellow light ) idiot. Probably why there are so many autobody repair shops in town.

Amen. I don't drive a Corvette with a turn the other cheek attitude. I've had enough of turning the other cheek. People think becasue they buy an SUV that the commercial says "has attitude" and they watch NASCAR, they are invincible. I don't have a need to prove them wrong except when they think they are about to cut someone off just for the fun of it. That is the time to teach a lesson.

If that's childish, I'm forever young baby.

SUV's, Pick-ups and Vans

Interesting discussion on SUV's. Last summer I took a trip in my 94 Coupe, through northern California and Nevada. Nevada has some great 2-land highways. Smooth, wide and very little traffic. I would usually cruise along at 80 MPH. Every now and then something would come up behind me and almost climb up my tailpipes, then go blasting by at 90 MPH+. Was it another Corvette? Viper? Mustang? Rice wagon? NO.....it was usually a lumbering SUV with a family inside. Sometimes it was a kid in a jacked up pick-up with more testosterone then brains, or maybe a soccer mom in a mini-van.

The point being, that performance cars, especially Corvettes, are always getting the bad rap, for reckless driving. In most cases guys with a lot of horsepower under the hood, are pretty cool about it..they know there is a time and place to use it. These SUV people on the other hand, don't have a clue about vehicle handling or stopping distances. They get a false sense of security in their 3-ton land yachts, and if they have to make a quick lane change or an emergency stop, they would probably end up in the ditch after several roll overs. Yet these are the folks that always preach "safety" and obey the law, yet its OK for them to drive 30 MPH over the limit with a vehicle full of kids.

Now...if they are also on a cell phone.......ahhhh....no....don't even get me started on that one...........

Oh yeah......how could I ever have forgotten about THOSE morons? The Dale Earnhardt Jr types, who all think they are race car drivers, and their modified Brinks truck is a race car?

Then again, I figured everybody knew that anyone becoming an owner of an SUV/4x4/minivan, automatically priviledges them to travel 15mph or more over the posted speed limit, regardless if this is out on the open highway or in town driving.

It's said to actually be located in the fine print on the back of the purchase agreement.

In addition to the blatant speed limit extensions they have, there is this thing that permits them to have their headlights adjusted too damned high (they can be picked out in an approaching group of vehicles at night from as far as a mile or more away, just from they're brighter than everyone else headlights.....including semi's).

And there is the "idiot clause" that allows them to feel that it's really cool looking to drive around in broad daylight or on perfectly clear nights with every forward facing headlamp on their vehicle turned on, including fog lights.

And the beat goes on.......:eyerole
