Hi everyone,

Well normally I wouldn't be one to mess with how my cars come from the factory, but I am considering swapping out the DNE 4+3 for an Auto Transmission.

Just wondering if anyone has done this and what was involved.

Just thinking about it as the 4+3 is a pain and the wife can't drive a manual.

Stick to manual

Can't see I've seen any threads on that conversion but I have seen a few on auto to manual. If nothing else, read them in reverse as you are trying to go back to the original configuration.

Normally I'd say to sell what you have an get an automatic as it would likely be cheaper, but assuming it's a right hand drive that might not be a viable option.
Good luck.

Thanks

Yeah, I started to make a list of what would be needed.
She has had a RHD conversion, as long as auto-84 coupes don't have the engine and trans alignment changed for conversion it may be just as simple as changing auto parts for the manual parts.

I know the later C4's on some conversions, have the engine and trans shifted over during the conversion.

I like the manual setup, but the OD doesn't work and although I have a rebuild kit for it and the OD unit, this doesn't guarantee that I will be able to get it working.
Either way, the 4+3 has to come out, it has leaks.

Too bad it's 'got to go'. If you're open to a thought prior to doing anything, had you thought about an overdrive tranny replacement? My 86 started life with a 4+3 in it, but prior to my buying it last year the 4+3 was swapped out for a Tremec TR3550 5 speed. I can't be absolutely sure (because I bought it at an auto auction) but from what I can tell it looks like it was a direct replacement. It looks like they used the oem slave, bell housing, etc and I can't see that the driveshaft or C-beam was modified. It sure looks like it could have been a direct bolt-in. It may look more expensive to discuss this type of replacement till you start adding in the mod costs along with labor then it might even be cheaper in the long run if you can find a bolt-in. About the only actual mod I found on mine related to the swap was the addition of a Dakota Digital signal convertor for the speedometer.

I would say this tranny is not the best choice if you're going for drag racing etc. In my case it's a cruiser, so for that it works fine and I've gotten over 30 mpg at 75 mph before. It's only turning about 1800 rpms at that speed so it can be economical in addition to being fun.

Good luck whatever you decide.
