Not in my experience. I had the rubber lines and replaced them with S/S both front and rear, the pedal was slightly firmer but not harsh at all. I would recommend them over the rubber any day.

Such as these? ... http://www.ecklers.com/product.asp?pf%5Fid=32732&dept%5Fid=1064 I've been told they may cause TOO harsh of a brake feel at the pedal.

A myth.
There is no such thing as "too harsh" a brake pedal feel.

What briaded stainless steel covered Teflon brake hoses do is very slightly improve pedal feel by eliminating the slight expansion rubber hoses experience when they are pressurized.

Obviolusly, to make use of this slight improvement, the rest of the brake system must be in excellent shape and the system must be free of air.

Typically, problems with pedal feel on C3s are not such that going to braided hoses makes a big improvement. This is because the system is very prone to air ingestion and few DIYs have the experience or the willingness to invest the time and money to get the system working well.

However, once the 65-82 disc brakes are properly modified (to reduce their tendancy to "suck air") and properly maintained, the addition of braided hoses can be a final, performance "touch".

There are many vendors for this stuff but the best comes from either Aeroquip or XRP.
