I also belong to a GTO forum and there was a recent post regarding using synthetic lube in Muncie 4 speed transmissions. It was said that they have additives that can damage the internals. Any thoughts?

If you use a synthetic lube which meets the GL4 standard and which is either a 90 wt. or a 75W90, it will work fine in your Muncie.

When I had a Muncie in my 71 Coupe, I ran Red Line MT90 synthetic gear lubricant. MT90 meets GL4 and is a 75W90.

is that not what it is made for .i would think that synthetic gear lube would be for gears .i use it in my mowing tractor and it shifts a lot better than when i used regular gear oil.i also push snow with it .much better shiffting when its cold.i would use it in my car if i had a stick.the only negative to synthetic is the price.:beer

I've been running Red Line synthetic in my GTOs and Vettes for 20 years, and the GTOs have seen hard usage as weekend bracket racers. The shifting is smoother, and I haven't lost a synchro since switching over.

Synthitic gear lube that is not gl4 has sulfur in it when can damage the brass components inside the muncie trans. That said, redline has an additive in their non gl4 oils that they claim does not harm the brass.
