Well I have been thinking about getting a 5 speed OD trans to replace the 4 speed. I noticed the the T-5 has a .75 OD 5th gear. The cost is really low on these trany used. I have found several for around $500; It could be in the C3 for around 41000 or less if it fits and would work. Much less than the $2500-$3000 for new aftermarket units. They were used in the Firebirds and other models in the mid to late 80s.

So, the question is:
Has anyone done this?
Can it be used in the C3 without major modifications?
Does anyone out have any information on this trany or using it in a C3?
Is it strong enough?

You all know the questions. Now I'm looking for information and feedback.
I thank you now, becuase I'm sure someone out there can help.

I would recommend that you visit corvetteforum.com for this one. There is a huge thread running right now discussing the T-5 specifically along with the T-56. I think there are about 65 postings. Norval Wilhelm is a brilliant engineer and installed a mustang t-5 in his vette using a homemade adapter plate which he describes in detail in another thread at that site.

T5 question

Does anyone know if a T5 from a 86 z28 305 will fit a C3? I found one locally. The summary list from the other forum specifically lists GM 88 and up world class t5s?
Used Chevy T5 ('88 & Up 305V8, World Class)

I hope someone can tell us what really fits and what it takes to get it in there.

Using the T5 sounds like a good option, but so far I just haven't gotten enough information on how to do it, If it can be done. Let me know if you find out anything.

OK come on out there help us out!!

I'm not sure but I think I read in an old issue of hot rod that some of the Camaro t-5s were mounted on an angle and would not fit because of this.
Good luck there is another cheap option which is a late 70's early 80's 4-speed GM truck trans which has an OD 4th and is the same size as the origional 4-speed.

Yep I am with you, I believe its like 18 degrees off center. I think I can just use a standard Muncie belhousing to install. Is it worth the effort to switch to a hydraulic clutch? I don't think my engine has been drilled to accept the clutch linkage. I suppose I could pull it but I just put it in last year........

Anyone know how difficult it is to hang a clutch peddle or even a source for a used peddle? I wish I had done this before the new dash.

try Barry at http://www.michigancorvette.com/ for a used setup, I don't know haw hard it is, but all the parts are availabe either used or aftermarket. There are probably threads about it as it seems to be quite common (stick/auto swap)
