1971 Coupe
I just purchased a 1971 Coupe. It is amazingly original (and worn out). I have seen so little replaced on the car, that there is a likelihood, the tank is also original. Is there anyway to determine if this is an original tank, with possibly a tank sticker, without dropping the tank?

I can't remeber if I saw mine with a flashlight and mirror or not, other than that there really is no way to see if without dropping the tank. It's not that hard, just takes a while......good luck!

If it has A/C, and therefore does not have the Astro Ventilation ductwork, you can take the read deck vents off and may get a glimpse with a flash light. Or shove the neighbor kid's skinny arm through the hole. The flashlight in the vents with a dental mirror is how I saw that mine wasn't there on my old 71. I was able to get in at a pretty sharp angle since mine was a vert but that still should work with a coupe.

Good Luck!

wanew...I was able to actually see my tank sticker by peering at an angle through the gas lid opening & using flash light (was stuck down on pass. side). Could possible see it using a hand held mirror as well I would think. Good luck!

Tank sticker

I could see mine by looking up between the front of the tank and the storage well. The sticker was dangling over the edge of the tank. With a light you could see the bottom of the sticker and I could even see the writing on it.

Pulling the tank isn't that hard. I had the local mechanics give me a hand and I used their hoist to drop mine. You don't need a hoist, but it does make it easier. The spare tyre storage area must be taken off along with the tank cross member. Some guys disconnect the fuel lines, but if you use a hoist, you will not need to as they move enough to get your head and arms up to slowly remove the sticker with a razor blade. Really easy and only took about an hour and a half.
Hey, it may not be there, but if it is get it off before it is cactus. My sticker had to come off as my car is a St Louis car and there are no build sheets available from the NCM.

Cheers

Tony laid out the procedure really good, my only suggestion, and it's probably obvious, but, be sure the gas tank is empty, or very, very close to empty before you loosen everything up ;)

Oh yeah, thanks for the heads up Bud, I forgot about that.
It would make it a little heavy if you don't.
