I took apart a flat tappet engine but I'm assembling a roller one... so I'm not sure how some of the parts go together. My assembly guide is only for the 86 with flat tappet, so it's no use. I'll probably have to invest in a later book as well, but can't right now.

I have (or will have) 16 roller lifters, one lifter retainer, 8 lifter guides, some bolts (for the retainer) and some washers (also for the retainers).

1. Judging by the way the roller is situated, is there only one way the lifter can sit in the bore, or can it face any of several directions (as long as the roller is down :) )?

2. It appears that I install the lifters, then install the guides, then the retainer. The lifters have been soaking in oil, so they're set. Do I have to lube the guides? Is there a special orientation I have to look out for, like is there an up or down on the guides?

3. Anything I've missed, or any gotchas?

Thanks much...

Reading from a '95 LT-1 Service manual, "Coat valve lifter rollers with prelube, GM P/N 1052365 or equivalent, ..." install valve lifter assemblies then lifter guides then retainer then retainer bolts/screws.

I've never had an LT-1 apart but other roller lifters (3.8L) I've seen had the guide engage the lifter in such a way that you couldn't miss. There's a diagram in the manual but no mention of and impossible to see lifter orientation.

Hope someone who knows jumps in.

BTW Valve lash is set at 1 (One) turn down from Zero lash per the service manual.

rrubel, your view on the assenbly of this set-up is right on the money!!!! Lifters go in, guide plates next, then the SPIDER. Put a little lube on EVERYTHING!!! youll be fine!!!! 3/4-1 turn from zero valve lash. :D
