I have a 97 auto the temp is always around 220-230.. The car runs like sh_t at this temp.. Im in Miami so its always hot here. I always have the AC on so that the fan is always blowing that seems to help. Does both fans turn on with the ac or does another one kick in at 230? Also do I really have to reporgram the PCM or can I just put a 160 Term and have the fans run all the time? I did this on a c4 and it helped but IM not sure about the C5. Im also going to bypass the throttle body coolant line.

HI there,
It sounds to me like you have blockage in the front AC condenser, radiator area, which restricts flow of air through the assembly.
While a 160 will help with baseline temperatures, it will continue to get hot as long as airflow is NOT going through the radiator.
You fans will always be on when the air conditioning is on.
However, when the AC is on, the condenser is also hot, due to the function of the AC, so it will also make it harder to cool the engine, if there is a blockage.
I would have the condenser checked for debris first, and then proceed with correct diagnosis of the condition.

I' did a quick check and didnt see any bags or anything.. Just look through the front were it scoops the air right? One last question Even though I have the AC on I here a second fan kick in at 230. Are both fans suppose to be on when the ac is on?

Hi there,

The cooling fan relays are used to control the high current flow to power the cooling fan motors. Both fans operate together. When minimum cooling is required, the PCM energizes CoolFan1(#45) and both fans operate at low speed, since the fans are connected in series through CoolFan2 (#43) and CoolFan3 (#44). When maximum cooling is required, the PCM energizes all three cooling fan relays. The left fan is still powered through CoolFan1, but is now grounded through CoolFan3. The right fan is now powered directly through CoolFan2 and both fans operate at high speed.

This starts at 228 degrees, at low speeds, and when 240 is attained, the higher speeds kick in, as when autocrossing.

Thanks for your help... .. I didnt find any debris in the radiator when I looked through the bottom. I did notice that the black tank for the water had a really small leak. Can this small leak have something to do with this. Regardless I have to change the tank but im couroius.. The coolant level was ok... Do you have to bleed the C5 like we had to with the C4.. I hope not since I cant find that screw anywhere. And one last question is 220-230 concidered running too hot for a c5... I know my c4 ran hot most of the time. And is there a way to setup a switch so I can control the fans Highspeed and low speed with a switch? Thanks again for your help.

HI there,
220-230 is fine. If you are going to do a drain and fill, remove one of the throttle body coolant hoses, to bleed the system, as you fill the tank.
As far as turning on the coolant fans, yes, there are a few vendors whom supply fans controllers.
You might want to try www.c5store.com.
They are a community vendor, and may be able to assist you.

c4c5specialist , Thanks for all your help. The car did get to 235 it is hot here but dam.. Anyways I took off the thermostat as a test to see if it was that. Same thing just takes longer to get there thats all. Its always at least 80 deg here in miami Is there a need to put one in for pressure? I just removed the spring and off came everything else. So the housing is completley open. I obvouisly dont care for the heater here in miami. Will this cause any damage? Also I was looking into trying 40 below is that stuff any good? Water wetter didnt help much.
