How or where to check if the temperature on the guage is correct?

Some time back, I put my temp sending unit in water with a candy thermometer and took some measurements. This is what I found:

Temp----Sensor
155------185ohms
190------134ohms
205------109ohms

So, assuming my sending unit was correct (which I believe it was), you should be able to go to Radio Shack and purchase a resistor in this range and put it in place of your sending unit and look at the gauge reading.

I'd probably just go get a 100 ohm resistor and expect the gaue to be in the 210 - 220 range.

To connect the reisistor:
1) Pull the wire connecting to the temp sending unit.
2) Connect one end of the resistor to the wire. If it has a spade connectory, you can probably just slide the resistor wire into one end of the connector.
3) Connect the other end to something metal on the engine. This will provide the ground. You could just hold the resistor while someone else looks at the gague.

Thanks, you guys are great. has anyone tried a Laser Thetmometer (laser temperature reader), if so does it work, someone recomended a meat thermometer, but I don't know how I would place it in the radiator or something.

Placing the meat thermometer in the rad wont give you an accurate reading. With the cap on the discharge side of radiator, the coolant has been "cooled". So you are reading the temp of coolant going back into engine. The temp sensor is located towards the end of the coolant loop, in the block. I have a multi-meter that has a temp fuction. It has a special connector that plugs into meter and the other end I place on the t-stat housing. You could probably do the same with the meat thermometer?
