The windshield is way to expensive.

Hi all, anybody changed the windshield on a late C4? Mine has a huge crack on it, and i need a new one. But in Norway it cost 3000 dollar+, because of some expensive exstra parts that's needed to change the windshield :ugh, a bit too expensive i think. Do i really need those exstra part's. Don't remember the english word for it :confused
Need to look in my dictionary once i get home for the correct word, moldings or something.

Hi Tobben, When I bought my 94 Conv this summer, the windshield was replaced, it was done by SAM-GLAS in Gothenburg. The previous owner most probaly had it done via his insurance. When I later showed the car for one of my friends at Corvette Sweden he said that normally you have to replace the Weather Strips (expensive) around the windshield, however they manage without doing that. I guess the success rate in doing it without replacing the weather strips depends on, how skilled the copany is, and the shape of the weather strips. Have you got prices from more than one source ?

The inport fee for the car isn't payed yet, so it doesn't have any badge and it isn't registrated. Because of that, i don't have any insurance on my vette, no insurance company is willing to insurce it yet :eyerole
I'll wait a year before i registrate it, the fee will drop to 162000Nkr (23142$) But i want to used it a bit before that time. I guess i just pay full price for the windshield and drop the weatherstrips. I'm a mechanic, so i should be able to change the shield without the strips IF it's possible . I'll give it a shot . There some highly dedicated bodyrepair mechanic's where i work so it should be alright. At least i now know it's possible, thanks for the info
I only have one source yet, they said they had to order from the USA. I guess they wan't a part of price as well, maybe i should just order directly from the USA myself :L. Their prize were 7000Nkr (1000$) + 25%. I'm gonna do some research first, see if i can find some cheaper:eyerole. Are they cheaper in Sweden, you have any idea?

Hi, I just checked my windshield, it's made by Pilkington, one of the major glass players in the world, a UK based company. So I belive you should be able to pick one up locally.
e.g. Samglas AB levererar fönster och hjälper er med stenskott.

Yes,Pilkington now owns LOF that made the original C4 windshield!!
I install them (NEW) All the time here with(NEW Genuine GM)weather strip in the US for less than $850.00 USD!!
They must Tax the heck out of you poor dudes over there!hnoeshnoeshnoes

This job was less then $4,000. USD with New Windshield,GM Glass Top,A&B Pillar Weather Strips,Body Repair and Paint work!!

My price for the weather strip set was 2300$+ in Norway, some bandit's aren't they
Once the snow is melted, i'll take the vette for a test drive or two, or three. Then i'll take of the windshield. I'll see if i need the weatherstrip set or not. Anyway, i want it driveable by spring, no matter what it cost
Aet ab corvette store didn't have any windshield. I'm gonna try som other net store's. See if i can find one with a nice price :cool. I need to pay the part's price, the shipping fee and then 25% inport fee for the total price of the part.
Your vette look's great. I'll show some picture of mine later, then you'll see how harsh climate do to such car's when they aren't used and not stored in a comfy garage :eyerole

Hi,

Went to my friends at Corvette Sweden - Lars Tidblo Automobil to pick up some parts for my car.
I asked them how much they would ask for a windshield to a 94 coupe. A genuine GM is SEK 5461 + VAT, (~680 USD+VAT) excl. weather strips, they have shipped to Norway earlier, no problem.

WOW!! I'm amazed and at the same time SORRY to read about your windshield problem. I had the one changed on my 86 Vette for FREE, and the installer came to my house to do it in the driveway. He removed and reused all those "special" parts some places try to charge you for. Took the guy about an hour.

All I had to do was call my insurance company and file the claim and when the installer was finished all I did was sign my name, showing the job was done to my satisfaction. I had AllState-Lloyds.

I know this won't help you in your situation, but maybe it'll help some of the guys here, in the States.

VAT = moms = 25 % in Sweden as well. I know that some Norwegians have parts Shipped to a Poste Restante address in Sweden and pick up the parts in personal ;-)

So you can either have the part shipped to your address, paying Norwegian VAT and possible other charges, or ship to a PR address in Sweden paying only freight.

I don´t understand why everybody here in Sweden (maybe Norway as well) do business with those Vette parts suppliers.
I understand that it´s the easy way to get parts but there are cheaper ways.
They all use a conversion rate of about 11.50-12.00 Swedish Crowns to the dollar (all in).
I have gotten my parts from different companies from the US at a rate of 8.50 (all in).
Just find a partner that can collect parts in the US (with other words, you have them shipped from a supplier in the US to an address in the US where they can ship them from in a container to Sweden or Norway).

An example here.

Two cooper zeon 2xs 275/40-17 tires (new ones, they are produced week 27 2008) cost 290 USD.
I paid a total of 2870 Swedish crowns including mounting.

One cooper zeon 2xs 275/40-17 costs 2399 Swedish crowns alone without mounting in Sweden.

Two brake rotors cost me a total of 990 SEK shipped to my door here in Sweden, one brake rotor (same brand) here in Sweden cost 925 SEK and you have to get it yourself or have it shipped wich costs extra.

Do some research before you get parts, you might earn some money down the road, that´s what all does middle men (eat ab, klintberg & way, hansen racing) do.

PM me, I have a contact here in Sweden that has an address in the US where you can have your parts shipped to for further transport to Sweden.

Don´t forget here that when you order something from Ecklers or Midamerica or so to be shipped directly to your door, they will ship the items by AIR.
NO GOOD, you will pay double for your parts or even more.

Here´s a list of my goodies ordered from different companies in the US.

Two cooper zeon 2xs 275/40-17 at USD 290. Mounted SEK 2870.

Two brake rotors from Midamerica at USD 100. On my car for SEK 990.

One autoxray ezscan 6000 from Devildogtools at USD 299. To my door for SEK 2970.
Three piece plastic rear interior trim set from Midamerica at USD 160. To my door for SEK 1580.
IAC and O2 sensor from Midamerica at resp. 80 and 25 USD. To my door for resp. SEK 790 and 245.
Hatch struts (set with defogger) from Midamerica at USD 75. To my door for SEK 740.

Maybe one or two parts were cheaper somewhere else, but I found Midamerica was better than others.

Why did I buy all those parts? I am in the process of doing my weatherstrips, so I needed the new trim set and my hatch struts were dying.
Autoxray6000, not needed but fun to have and being able to help others.

And keeping the economy in the US from going under (my few bucks anyway).

How does your contact in the US handle freight insurance, all EU import fees, etc.

I prefer shopping locally, first of all it's easier as you say, but also to support my local guys who most of the time has the parts in stock. By doing that I know that if I have a real problem they are there to assist me. I can also do eventual warranty claims directly here in Sweden.

Interesting to see when they will raise their rates in that case.

It´s everybody´s choice to do or don´t what they want.
I personally like it this way.
It can be a plus though to get parts locally here in Sweden when you are in a hurry.
It can take some time for parts to arrive from US the way I order them, but that´s no problem for me.
The way I see it I have saved myself some money and that counts for me.
Freight insurance is included in this price I pay them here in Sweden as well as the EU fees or the import duty and "moms".
They collect a number of items from different customers from Sweden until they can load up a whole 20 ft container wich they ship to Sweden, where they take care of it here.
On the Swedish site for import and taxes you can find out aprox. how much you will pay for each item, so it is possible to do the math before you order something to see if it really pays of to do it this way.
I found out for instance that it is cheaper to buy the tires I mentioned before, but it wouldn´t make a difference if I would buy 195/65-15 in Sweden or the US.
The 275 is sold in higher numbers in the US than here in Sweden, that´s why they are more expensive here.
You don´t see hundreds of Vettes or new stangs (wich IIRC have the same size as my 91) over here.
