We came back from the coast to 105 degree weather. The old C-4 was showing 200-215 on the guage so I shut the a/c off when going up hills. When we got home, put the car in the garage and opened the hood. When the engine was shut down after about 5 mins idle, the guage read 230+. Should the thermo fans come on at some point in all this? Obviously, we can't tell at speed but should they come on after shutting the engine down and in a hot condition like today

Coolant was topped before the trip and no leaks. Ran all day down to the coast at +-190

any thoughts appreciated, Ted

I don't think your fans come on till 232 I think. I am not sure since yours is a 96. The fan should be running while you have the AC on, and no I don't think that the fan will run with the ignition off, and the key on. At least mine doesn't.

But the temps you are seeing are normal for a stock C4.

Living in Florida I see those temperatures every day. These are normal temperatures for our cars and running the A/C actually helps since the cooling fan stays on all the time. The running fan moderates the temperature swing when stopping in traffic. :cool

This was Gordon's advice at the C4 seminars at Carlisle. Every time I've tried it, the temp dropped about 15 degrees.

I have a glitch in my fan system and my auxilery fan does not always seem to run when it should. For now I put a bandade on the problem by installing a switch to the ground wire on the auxilary fan relay. I can now turn on that fan anytime I want.

thanks for the info. 230+ sure sounds scary though. If I left the a/c on going up hill, the temp would rise. I guess I did not let it get past 212-215 to see if the a/c would cool it.

So, if I'm in the garage start er up and turn on the a/c, I should hear the fan, right ?

Yes, with the a/c on, the fan will run all the time. When I am in traffic, and I see the temp starting to go up, I turn the A/C on to LOWER the engine temp. It keeps it in the 200 degree range. I could spend a lot of money on coolant additives, computer chips, theromostat's, but why. Just turn the A/C. If the car is moving, say 30mph and up, it will cool itself just fine.

The aux. fan is set to go on at 237 deg. leaving the A/C on will help cooling. Make sure you have the spacew between the condenser & radiator clean and A/F mixture no more than 50 - 50 less is better. Air dam must be all there and seals around the rad help too.
