well, here are my exhaust manifolds after removing them from the car and glass bead blasting them (thanks again Bernie!), than applying the "Hot Stuff" manifold dressing and baking them in the oven.

What an improvement over the brown and rusty looking things they were before.
The picture makes them look a bit brighter and more shiney than they really are because of the flash, but in person they look great. This alone will make a very noticable improvement on the underhood appearance of the car when i'm done.

When I'm ready to reintall them, I also ordered and got in all new hardware such as new studs and crimp nuts, donuts, gasket, mounting bolts, washers, french locks, and a spacer piece to replace the heat riser instead of tying it open. :)

Barry - be sure to check the condition of the hot air tube that passes through the passenger side manifold. It's probably just the viewing angle, but I do not see it in your picture.

The manifolds look great.

Brian, it's there, you just can't see it from the angle of the pic

John, thanks! :) Actually, on the drivers side manifold I think i'm going to get it bead blasted again and redo the "Hot Stuff" dressing on it as on the side that isn't showing didn't come out quite as perfect as the back side or as nice as the passenger side manifold came out. I must have gotten it on a bit too thick and it just isn't up to the standards I want it to be. But overall the glass bead blasting and the dressing made a HUGE difference and I'm thrilled how they look.

Barry, Where do you get Hot Stuff manifold dressing & how is it applied?

What he said......and by the way...the do look good...they are motivating me....

I ordered it from Paragon because I was already placing an order for a bunch of parts but it's a few dollars less expensive from Virginia Vettes - in fact it comes from Virginia Vettes because it still had the VV markings on the packaging.

applying it was easy. it's in a slurry form in a small plastic container. I used a small brush to paint on a light coat over the both manifolds. Since they were off the car the directions say to let it air dry about two hours than bake them in the oven at 275* for an hour and they are done. If they are still on the car when you do them, let them air dry the two hours than run the car to let the motor's heat bake them.
it goes without saying that you want the manifolds as clean as possible before applying the Hot Stuff. I glass bead blasted mine but if they are on the car you can get rid of surface rust, dirt, etc with a stiff wire brush and wipe them down good.

Herb, thanks!

just a quick note....you didn't by chance bake them out in your wifes kitchen oven????? The same one that you bake food in and eat???? Please tell me you didnt do that????

There are gases and such that come off these kinds of things that you wouldn't want to eat when you bake them out..............for future thought.......

Herb
matter of fact I did, and since I do 95% of the cooking here at home I consider it MY kitchen oven. ;LOL

Actually, after baking the manifolds in the oven I continued to let the oven bake empty for another hour or so but with the door of it cracked open. the exhaust fan on high and the kitchen window open to let any possible fumes, gases, etc out.
Also, notice how the worded my answer above.......? the DIRECTIONS say to let it air dry two hours than bake it?? well, i fell asleep for the night between it air drying and baking it so by the time I woke up in the morning and than baked them in the oven they were also completely dry anyway so there was no sticky residue to remain in the oven and the only thing I had to be concerned about was fumes, etc which I dealt with.

Barry I have to say I am real proud of how agreesively your digging into this engine bay,Cant wait to see you in person nextyear ins carlilse to shake your dirty cut up hands.

If you handle the manifolds now do you get a little silver shiny stuff on your hands? or are the done curing?

if its the stuff in the little red tub,I treid this stuff and even after baking and using the car silver always came off in my hand.Mine was completely seperated when I purchased and Goo on top of the tub and silver on the bottom. I may have just gotten a bad batch

Larry
thanks for the kind words. Some of the things i'm trying to do on my car get a bit frustrating because of my total lack of experience but I keep trying to plug along anyway :) Luckily, besides all of you on here, I have one or two people that have been emailing me with tips, suggestions, and advice as I go along........ they know who they are :beer

Yep, I do have a couple cuts on my hands already......... as to be expected. And I'd always be honored to shake your hand Larry at Carlise or anywhere.

Yes, the Hot Stuff came in the little red container. It doesn't say in the instructions but you have to stir it up pretty good before you use it as it does seperate a bit after it sits for an extended period.
None of it comes off on my hands at all, at least not so far. In fact, after it air dried overnight it was completely dried before I put it in the oven the next morning. I picked them up with my bare hands to put them in the oven and nothing came off on my hands at all and nothing after they baked and cooled either.
So far with the results I've gotten from the stuff I'd heartily recommend it and reuse it again myself. Actually, I AM going to reuse it myself as I'm not 100% happy about how one section of one manifold came out. It's my fault and I applied the dressing a bit too thick so I want to glass bead blast that one manifold again and redo it.
However, for me the true test will be once they are back on the car. I want to see how long this stuff will last. i've heard good things about it lasting but I know a lot of the products out for exhaust manifolds don't seem to last very long and after a year or so they look as bad as before you started. i'm hoping this stuff will last quite a while.

Barry, those manifolds look great!! However, you must not be married. The last time I baked a part in the oven to get paint to set, I stunk up the whole house. Even the dog looked at me funny. The wife threatened me to stay out of her kitchen or I might lose something important. Whoa, my baking days are over!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Coves, yes I'm married actually. But I do most of the cooking so I consider the kitchen mine and if she is good i'll let her in it at times. ;LOL
I also was smart and did the baking of the manifolds early in the morning while she was still asleep and she wasn't even aware of it (hey, i may consider the kitchen mine but i'm not completely stupid either..... ).
Since they air dried overnight first they really didn't even put out any smell to stink up the place anyway although I was expecting some so had the exhaust fan on high and the kitchen window open.

I don't cook unless it comes in a can, a bottle or a paper bag. What time is dinner?

tonight will be early since we are probably going to the movies - around 5:30 or 6:00.
hope you like Filet Mignon and my own secret steak sauce with corn in a butter sauce and fries and some fresh dinner rolls. Maybe a ceasar salad to start too, I haven't decided yet.
it's going to be a very casual dinner tonight since I'm using ready-made rolls rather than taking the time to bake my own like I usually do.

Ahhhh, speaking of baking, you should see when I make my Chilli and serve it in my freshly baked bread bowls. :)

Barry, you're a regular RENAISSANCE MAN!!! Sounds good. Chili is my favorite. A REAL Texas tradition. Oh, yeah, Frito pies are wonderful!!! Good luck with your car!!!
