I am looking at a 2001 C5. I just want to know a few things. What to look out for and are there any major problems that occured with this car during the 2001 year? 2001 White Coupe fully loaded with 32000 miles on the odometer. Thanks.

The biggest thing with the earlier C5's was the oil consumption issue. I would have the dealer do a service report on the vehicle for you. It doesn't take long and it will give you the service history of the car from brand new. And you'll be able to see if the car had it's oil rings changed. Good luck with the search.

Does this mean if I buy the car and it is not consuming oil, that later on I won't have any problem in this area? Or is this something that I have to keep an eye on after I buy the car?

I just recently got rid of my C4 and got a C5. Now, don't get me wrong the C5 is a very nice car... but... I really miss the feel of my C4. I should have kept it.

If the car is an A4 tranny you may be fine. If it's a MN6 you'll have to monitor it. If you get into keeping the revs up with the 6 speed is when the oil comsumption becomes an issue.

The feel of my C4 is that it skips all over the road and the brakes won't stop it after they heat up. I don't miss that.

Richard.

The oil comsumption issue is a "ZO6" issue. I have not heard of any oil comsumption issues with the LS1. In fact, our ex-98 coupe ran perfectly and never showed any oil consumption.

Your '92 is really sharp but I fully understand the call of a new set of wheels. First, I agree with Tuna, the oil consumption problem of the '01's are confined, I believe, to the Z06 and covered by the warranty. You might want to test drive a C5 to feel the differences between the C4 and C5. Let us know what you decide. :)

Boy, my '84 Z51 didn't do that at all. Handled the twisties like it was glued to the road. Not that the C5 handles badly, just more like a high preformance Buick.

I have heard that the C5 is a lot smoother as far as ride quality goes. The car I am looking at has an automatic tranny by the way. I will be test driving it tomorrow. What is the difference between the trannys? Did they make two different automatics?

I've got the Z51 suspension under my 99 FRC and it handles all of the twisties like nothing Else I've driven........including a Buick. I have a neighbor that just traded a 96 CE for a 99 vert and he says there is a world of difference in handling and performance from his C4. All an individual opinion I guess:w

Don't misunderstand me. I'm absolutely *not* saying that the C5 doesn't handle. I'm just saying that from my point of view the C4 simply had more of a *feel* of a sports car. The C5 is much smoother, at's all.

All I can say is I hope this is the car I am looking for. I want a car that acts like it is on rails but has a more comfortable ride without giving up performance.

G92 (performance axle) option is a must for me if it's going to be an auto.

Richard.

The test drive will tell you what you need to know. The C4 IMHO is more of a sport car feel. Having driven a couple C5's including one with a Z51 suspension and my own 84 with a Z51 there is alot of difference. the C5's ride is superior but I feel at the cost of some road feel. I feel the C4's were a better handling car when it came to max cornering power. The C5 to me feel more like a hi performance GT as compared to an all out sports car. This is just my .02

That's what I have actually except its an 85' auto with G92 and a 00' C5 with Z51. The 84/85's are very stiff and have shorter control arms so they bounce a bit on bumpy turns.
There's world of difference in the C5's without Z51. Fair warning, they slide all over the place under accelleration. Sadly there isn't really anything the C4 platform does better than the C5 platform. 85's were kings in their day.

Richard.

I gotta disagree Richard. 84 Z51 was the highest cornering Vette of the early c4's. The ride qualities of the C5 are excellent but I still feel the C4 platform was as good if not better in the twisties than the C5's and had more of a sport car feel than the C5. Again this is just my honest opinion.

Actually I agree on that. The 84/85 handled so well because the suspension was so stiff it could break your kidneys. In 86 they lengthened the controll arms and tamed it down some. That's why you need spacers if you change to later year rims.
But the C5 is 4 inches wider and longer and doesn't push in the turns like the C4. It just flat pulls more G's in the turns. Remember the trans is in the back now so the C5 has a higher slalom speed.

Richard.

Hmmm I guess I'll have to drive a C5 again to get the feel. I do agree with the break the kidneys statement. My 84 is one stiff ride. I don't feel my car push in corners too much. I know an 84 Z51 was a 1g car on the skidpad when it was introduced. I think the only C5 near that is the Z06. Either way they are both excellent cars.

The push is a relative statement. The C4 is predisposed to push because it is heavier in the front than the back. Don't assume that to mean it's a bad handler because it's not. In comparison to other cars it's price in 84/85 it's still turned better than any other American car. When they moved the trans to the back the Corvette went into a whole new league.
It's now described as near exotic car performance and near exotic car handling.

Richard.
