I am picking up my first Corvette this saturday (July 12th). Will be trailering it home. Where are the best points to attach the tie down straps? Just want to make sure I don't attach the straps to the wrong locations. Don't want to bend any fiberglass support locations. Thanks. Have trailered other cars, just never a corvette before.

CONGRATULATIONS!!! You couldn't have picked a better model as a place to start!

I don't know how far apart home and pick up points are, but if it were me, I'd spend the gas and trailor money on a plane ticket, then DRIVE it home.

Worst case is that I'd drive with a friend and let him/her drive the non-vette home.

ENJOY!

Greg, listen to Tom.......Catch a ride on a plane, train, or automobile (sounds like a good movie title), and drive it home. You won't be sorry.
Good luck and enjoy.:Steer :Steer :Steer :v

Hey Greg, I'm back again….and thanks Cruzer for the support.

Years ago (too many actually) I lived in SFO and purchased a new Honda 750....from a dealership in Riverside. I flew down to Ontario and took a cab to the dealership. Somehow, I managed to get out of there and onto I-10 right at the start of evening rush hour(s). The trek across LA was pretty scary but the reward came with the rest of the ride…. HWY 1 up the coast, thru Big Sur and into The City.

This time of year, the roads leading to Ann Arbor would be pretty good driving, I bet.

Wish I could feel comfortable driving the Vette home but it only has 1200 miles on it, I really need to change the fluids with fresh fluids ect........check out the wheel bearings ect before I drive it very far. It's been sitting alot and just would hate to have anything burn up on the rtip home.........greg

Sounds like good logic for sure. Also sounds like you found a heck of a deal!

Wonder what C4C5 would say about the soundness of the car.

Either way...ENJOY

Greg, welcome to the CAC. Sounds like a fantastic car and we would all love to see some pics when you get the car.

As to tie down, there is absolutely NO information on tie down locations in the owners manual. Maybe someone else has some info.

Maybe I can help.
I trailered a Honda Accord on a Uhaul full car trailer and they had this tie down system that went over the front tires and basically you used a crank to tighten the straps as tight as you could. This was enough to hold the car in place. The emergency brakes were applied and chains went loosely over the rear axle for emergency reasons. They were loose fitting to allow for the car to absorb the shock of the road without being restrained by the chains. You might want to try a Uhaul trailer.
BTW, I drove it from Radcliff, KY to Chicago, IL and the roads were horrible. Still, there were no issues or damage.
Good luck.

Greg--

I understand your concern, and admire the restraint. I'd be dying to drive it if I were the one picking it up, though! :D If you'd like another option to consider, here's what I did when I picked mine up 1 month & 3 days ago (time flies when you're having fun!):

Have the person/organization you're purchasing from take the car to whichever dealership or service facility he/she normally goes to (which isn't gonna be much @ 1200 miles, I guess!) for a safety check of fluid levels, etc. If anything needs to be done, you can have them do it before you get there, so that the Vette will be ready for you to drive it home.

I flew from B'ham, AL to Orlando, FL for only $115 on Southwest. Then I drove 150 miles down to West Palm Beach and another 700 back up to B'ham. Had no problems doing it this way, and got a great chance to get familiar with the feel of my car while doing a lot of "easy" driving on the highway.

Anyway, sorry this is yet another post not answering your original question, but, hey-- I've never trailered a Vette to know! :) Congrats on the purchase and good luck!!!

BTW, don't you want to drive it before sealing the deal anyway?

Oh I am going to drive the car before I hand the check over. Also taking a buddy of mine who is a drivetrain development eng. at the GM proving grounds (he was involved in the design & testing of the C5) and I am going to have him take it for a drive. He will know if all is ok with the car. Am planning on getting the car checked over & out after I get it home along with all fluids being changed ect......have been looking at all the C5 information web sites that I was able to find. The column lock recall did not include this car and am going to have them check the rear seal for leaking along with getting an extended warrr. from GM.

Good idea on checking the rear seals & tran pan. Just had mine replaced @ 24K mi.

I was out of original warranty but had purchased an extended from Warranty Direct on line. $100 deductible and absolutely NO problems.

Still think you should drive though.
