On a 1981 vette with Elec. Spark timing, Is there anything I need to disconnect prior to timing?

I thought that with an electrical distributor that timing and tuning-up wouldn't be necessary? I thought that that was the main benefit from going from a mechanical to electrical distributor. Am I wrong?

There is a brown wire just to the right (looking at the winshield) of the distributor that enters the firewall. It is one of the only single wires with a connector. You need to disconnect after car is warmed up then time as you normally would. I believe 6deg BTDC for the 81.

timing 81

Thanks Jonm, but lars' article does not mention a distributor with Electrical advance timing, do I simply disconnect the wire from the dist to the firewall then set my initail timing to 6 btdc, then adjust for full advanced at 2500 -2800 Rpms?

drsantos,

Lars article I believe will only apply to vacuum advance type distributors. You spark advance on a stock L81 is controlled by the computer and chip.
