I'm trying to find a decent chrome timing chain cover for my 1980 corvette. I checked summit racing but can't really find one that I know will work 100%, because of the water pump we have in our vettes.

Anyone got one on their vette? What kind?

Thanks
Mike

I have to be honest and say that I have only had problems with aftermarket chrome covers, both chrome plated steel and polished aluminum ones. Yet, I still have a couple of them because of chrome oil pans I somehow get as presents. Could be worse....

I always TRY to use the right seal (thick/thin) and lately have gotten by with slathering lots of Permatex #2 (flexible) and wiping off the excess when all is snug. I seem to have problems getting the right seal. Maybe someone else has a handy trick in determining whether to use the thin (1/4") or thick (3/8") seal.

If you have the access and the patience, I would have your original one chromed. That, to me, is an ideal situation-if chrome is what you want.:)

All pre-'75 production pans used the "thin" (0.22") front seal; 1975 and later production pans and service replacement pans for all years, manufactured after 1975, use the "thick" (0.41") front seal. To determine which one you need, flip the pan upside down on a flat surface (no gasket), and measure from the surface up to the 12 o'clock position on the front seal radius; if it measures 2-3/8", it takes the "thick" seal. If it measures 2-1/4", it takes the "thin" seal. All service pans for pre-'75 applications manufactured after 1975 come with a "thick" seal in the package. The timing covers didn't change - they all have the same bottom flange. :)
