Anyone know where the timing tab is located on a 73/454. I don't see it on the timing chain cover.???? I can only see the balancer from the drivers side.
TIA

Hey Jeff, is it possible that the cover is an aftermarket unit? You may have to install an
adjustable one or find a stock cover. peace Bud

look down behind the water pump from the top if you have the "long waterpump"

I don't know if mine is long or not. I just went out and looked it's nowhere to be seen. My engine is all original # match and 38K on the car. Still Orange/old paint on all the stuff. I have factory A/C. A lot of pulleys on this guy. I don't see a timing tab any where. I want to find TDC but don't want to pull the valve cover. If you seen my other post RE: Tach Problem I got everthing put back together and I was so happy I failed to mark the distributor when I pulled it to attached the cable on to the dist. I know how to find TDC,i.e. (pull valve cover check # 1 ehxt. & intk. are closed). I really don't want to do that. If I had a timing tab and got the balancer to TDC I got a 50/50 chance to get her cranked up.
TIA

Jeff,
Unhook the coil wire or the distrib primary wire so the engine cannot start. (if dist is in)
Remove #1 spark plug. Place your finger over the plug hole in the head. Have someone tap the starter so the engine turns just a fraction of a revolution. Repeat this until you feel the compression push your finger off the hole. You are now coming up on the compression stroke. This should get you close enough to get the dist set. Sounds like a nice car. Good luck.

Actually I found the timing tab. I had to look between this bracket that's on the front of the block. It's only sticking out about 1/16" I was looking for a big one. But I got the timing mark close to the tab,( past TDC about 1/2"). I set the dist past #1 a bit and she fired right up.
THANKS
"Jeff"
