I have a tire issue I would like to try 275/40/17 on the front and 275/40/18 on the rear is this workable. I read somewhere if front are too big it will interfere with steering tracking.
I now have 255/45/17 on front and 275/40/17 on rear.

Thats sort of true...just not exactly accurate..
its the wheel offset thats important. The wheel needs to fit on the hub and be spaced a specific distance outward so that it fits the body and inside the well. Remember suspension travel.

The bigger the diameter the less wheel well to work with...the wider the more critical the offset.
Worst case you may need some spacer/adaptors to move the wheel out and get them in the right track and correct position in the body....just depends on the wheel. If you stick to Corvette wheels, some form of 5 spoke (:() like the entire human race has done, there probably won;t be a fitment problem other than the rotation issues later on.

I run 275/40/17 on the front and have no problems except for barely rubs in extreme right turns but 1/4" bigger adaptors will fix that...I'm not in a full lock rt hand turn all day anyhow.

Been running 315/35x17s all around and only front issue is as Boom's; on the rear, scrubbing then breakage of the inner wheel well liner.

Sme searching will tell you exactly the width and height of the tires for comparison. This Tire Size Calculator
