Should a '78 Vette have a title? I'm going to look at a S/A real soon and I asked the guy if the title was clean, he said there no title just a registration. What gives???

No title = no deal! Something smells fishy here, and it isn't the Shark.

Or maybe there's a lein on it so the bank holds the title and the guy is just a little intellectually challenged.

I know here in NY the banks don't hold the title.

We have to send the title out to have a lein listed on it to show that the car has a loan out on it.

Itellectually challenged, Very possible.

Get the title or run away from this deal, there are plenty of nice vettes out there for you to pick from.

Rick

You might even want to talk to a cop about this.

Of course he should be able to provide a title! All cars have a title! Get the VIN and make a phone call to your local police, explaining the situation and asking them if they can help. The VIN on a 78 is on the driver's windshield pillar.

It depends which the state the car is coming from. Some states don't require titles after a certain age. I have a complete book on each state's title requirements. Let me know and I'll help if I can.

Chuck

GA Title

When we moved here from the West Coast and I went to register the 78, they were only going to give me a registration slip, with no title! I was flabergasted, and asked the lady if I could have a title, and she gave me one.

I was floored! How else do you prove ownership?! :eek

So, as a note...the non-title thing may not be fishy after-all. Check out the requirements for your state/county.

Isn't that amazing Heidi!

I brought my '68 from Mass and when I registered it in Maine, They took the title, took the title application fee, then sent the Application and fee (surprise) back saying it is not a titleable vehicle. I don't like that. At least I have the Mass title.

With that situation, the registration papers become VERY important.

Again, I have the complete title requirements for each state and would be happy to help anybody with this.

Chuck

If you can get the VIN number, run it through CARFAX. That should tell you a lot.
Like everyone says, be VERY carefull.............

I live in KY, and until a few years ago, KY was not a title state. You only got the registration slip.

I recently moved from Maine to Kentucky. I did not need a Maine title when I registered my 81 in Maine. As far as I know I'm ok with that in Kentucky as well. Different states definately have different requirements. Often on older vehicles a bill of sale with the sellers name and address is all that is required. Your deal may be ok, but check with your local DMV with the vin to be sure.

Chuck,

I'll ask you to verify this for me, as you can see both mjvftw and I are from NY.

I'm sure the statements I made are correct for NY, but since you have the documents please clear this up.

Pre-1973 the registation is transferable, while 73 and up there is indeed a title.

I'm really amazed that the are still states that use a transferable registration.

Rick

Not like it matters but I'll add my 3.5 cents (2 cents US)

Up here all you need is a bill of sale and the vehicle registration to transfer.

The registration has a place on the back to sign over ownership.

Not like it matters to you guys in the US tho.

Bill

If you have the option to get a title take it even thou you don't need it where you are now. Think about when you sell it and where the car might go. Maybe to a state that requires a title in order to xfer the ownership. Just a thought......

Cruzer82 I have a question for you seeing as how your from California and all.
I just got a 69 Chevelle from there and it still has the black tags on the car.The tiltle is pink and has the original owners name and release signature on it as well. They also sent me a white sheet that has "Report of Deposit Fees **This is not an Operating Permit** Reg Ex:00/00/00
It has make model ect and then some fees listed. For a bill of sale the seller(different than the owner) just wrote the amount and that he sold it to me and how much on an envelope.
Question is if this is all I need to get this thing registered anywhere else or does Cal have a bill of sale form that needs to be filled out??
Thanks,
Tim(intex99)

What you have is a rare and sot after car that was always registered in Calif. (no rust) I'm sure you have heard of the saying " I'll race you for pinks", well what you are holding in your hand is what they were talking about. The pink is the title. You don't need a Bill of Sale to register a car but if you have one the DMV will use it to figure out the sales tax on the sale of the car, if not they will use the Kelly Blue Book or an appraiser.
I think the "Report of Deposit Fees" is showing that registration and/or lic fees have been paid in Calif. and that the lic plates are current.
I believe if you have the signed and dated title, thats all you need. The Bill of Sale will just save you sales tax if Texas does that.
Hang onto those black plates and what ever you do, don't let anyone take them away. Tell the state they are part of the car and is what makes the value of that 69 a lot more than you think.

Thanks for the info Cruzer,
I got the 69 as payment from a deal gone bad on a 77 Vette I bought back in Dec. 2001 !It got vandalized before my shipper got there and the guy had already spent the money. He paid back some and looked as though I might never get the rest so took that to get peice of mind. Its a 4dr so not as much call for it as a 2dr but its rust free and solid.Just has a 307 that putts around and fun to drive for sure.Takes me back aways!
I listed it on Ebay and have it sold already to a guy in Wisconsin.Just wanted to check on title ect and now don't think he will have any problems with that. Will tell him to keep the plates for it though. The guy I got it from had it listed on Yahoo for a few months with no buyers soi guess I did okay.
I also just got an 81 Vette out of Modesto but title is clear and seller just faxed a bill of sale.Texas is getting tough on those things but there are ways to get around the system.
Yeah Momma sees my 80 and wants to drive it but can't handle 4spd and ain't gonna let her practice in mine so got her the 81.It needs some work come coming along fine with it.Mainly a good cleaning as interior looked like a greasy garage floor.Someone made ground effects out of chicken wire and bondo so got that off now taking it to get painted in next week or so.Thenm when its done she'll change her mind and not want it anymore but have some buddies here that are interested.
Anyways thanks for the info!!

You're right. NY became a title state on July 1, 1972. If it's a pre-1973, you need the Bill of Sale and an Affidavit of Sale (MV50 Form) with the back of the registration filled in. If it's through a dealer, they have to also fill in an MV-50 Form.

Cruzer82 has an excellent point for keeping and/or getting the title if you can because NY also requires a title on pre-73 cars if the car came from another state that has titling for the older ones.

Chuck

Thanks for the update Chuck,

I wasn't aware of the pre 73 out of state title issue, very glad you brought that up.

I guess we all need to be educated concerning title laws, seeing as alot of our cars are bought from states other than our own.
