Ok so after inheriting the car from a relative I have no title. From what information I gathered from an uncle the title was put up as collateral for a house. (does that seem right?) any ways my question is that I was told I would have to do what I think is called a quick claim deed or title from the BMV? I'm not sure if this is the right way of going about it? I'm hoping someone with a little more experience will chime in on this. Sorry for the lack of information this has been on the back burner for awhile and I think its about time for me to get this car registered and insured.
Any help would sure be appreciated.

First you need to run the VIN number through the DMV. I think Ohio has a form that you can submit to the state and pay a small fee to obtain the current registered owner as well as lien holders. In TN an auto repair shop as well as used car dealers can check the TN state database on line for a nominal fee. After you have the details as to who is the legal owner from the perspective of the State of Ohio you will need to research Ohio mechanic's lien laws, abandon vehicle laws. Also some states TN included have a provision to obtain a title by certificate of ownership. If you were in TN I could have you a title in about 90 days. A carfax report is worthless as it will not get you specifics as to who has a lien on the vehicle. Try this web site and put in your VIN. https://www.dps.state.oh.us/atps/

Also check out the forms section at the Ohio BMV. For example their is an "unclaimed motor vehicle affidavit" you may be able to use this form. How long has the vehicle been in your possession, what work have you done on the vehicle etc.

I have obtained numerous titles for vehicles in TN legally under TN mechanic's lien laws. Hope this helps

Quit claim. Talk to the attorney handling the estate as to what will be required to get the quit claim. Talk to the DMV folks to see what type of paperwork they will need.

It might also be a benefit to talk to the folks holding the title to see what they might need to relinquish their holding.

:)
