Steering Components: To Rebuild or Buy Rebuilt?

I am leaking either from the master or slave steering cylinder and really it is time to replace all the hoses and master and slave anyways.

So should I rebuild the cylinders or buy rebuilt ones?
Any special tools needed for the rebuild?
Any hi performance stuff worth taking a look at it?

I had replaced my hoses last winter and rebuilt the control valve last fall, as I found it leaking last fall after I got back from carlisle, my slave cylinder didn't to be replaced or repaired. If you have a leak I would go for the hoses and control valve first...BE SURE to check the return line coming out of the back of the power steering pump 1ST as if it is not clamped on well it WILL LEAK!!!!

good luck

B,
I carry the rebuild kits for the control valve and slave. I also have new and rebuilt control valves and rebuilt slaves. If the joint where the slave attaches to the center link is good and the ps works good you can replace the seals in the slave yourself. Be sure to check the shaft for nicks/damage. The new control valves I have are the best on the market and they don't leak. I also carry the hose kits.
On the bottom of the control valves is a grease fitting. This should never be greased. They are lubed when assembled. Greasing them afterwards will blow the seals.

I would say buy a rebuilt one, unless you are building a ncrs car.

Thanks for the info and help guys. I ordered the hoses and kits and am going to try to get to it this weekend. I need to do the oil pan gasket anyways, so I may hit all of it this weekend if I have time.

oh hey special thanks to Goob for the link. Looks like some great info...

I've had alot of rebuilt junk fail in 1-2 yrs. The quality keeps getting worse. I now try to buy new or rebuild myself.
