find that damn ticking sound. Not sure if its a rocker or maybe an exaust leak. I just hoping its not a piston slapping a valve.

and even worse, figure out why my passenger door all of a sudden decided that it doesn't want to open from either inside or out. :ugh I've got an extra set of locks, so i may just change it out

Hello 81 Corvette,

I had a similar problem with the passenger door on my 78. The door latch had gotten gummed up over the years and froze up with the door latched closed. I ended up tearing off my inside door cover to get to the door latch to get the door open. What I found was that the grease in the latch had turned to varnish and froze up the latch. I soaked it in carb cleaner for a few days and it worked like new. Just lubed it up with white litium grease and it works like new. Good luck with your car.
Regards,
Cal

Had same problem with DRIVER-side door of my '82 a few times in '02, but it resolved itself:
it happened again this October, while at a local shopping center, so my G/F had to slide-over the console/shifter to play with the inside release while I worked from the outside.....
(Luckily, she had worn a very short skirt that day, and watching her climb-around the interior made it worth-while!!!!! ;) )

I called the local Corvette shop, and he advised us to apply some Liquid Wrench/Fast Break-type solvent into the rear of the door:
back into the store we went, buying a spray-can of WD-40, and it quickly de-gunked the residue on the latch, and the door opened with-in a few minutes.

The Corvette-guru says it is fairly common on C3s, and that spraying the latch-mechanism often may keep it this from happening again.

We now keep a full can of WD-40, AND a short skirt, in the cargo-hold of the '82 at all times.

I wonder if I could get my wife to slide over the shifter and play with the inside release while I work it from the outside?

If she has nice legs and wears a short skirt and heels.....

it'll change your impression of a K-Mart parking lot forever!
:upthumbs

turns out the door was just frozen shut from some rain the other night. :L

still can't find the ticking. sounds like its coming from teh driver side, so i pulled the valve cover and the rockers were fine. I found some loose header bolts, so i tighted them back up.

when listening from the top of the motor it sounds ok, but when you put your head down by the gill, it seems more noticable.:confused

what could make a tick besides a rocker and exaust?

If you can better hear-it at the fender gill, could it be manifold-to-exhaust pipe leak?

wrist-pin.....
???

hmm, could a fuel pump going south make a ticking sound?

like i said before, i haven't been able to isolate the tick yet, but my fuel pump went out this morning.

i had no idea it had an issue, but it started puking gas out of two small holes on the sides near the top.

if its not u joints, its fuel pumps

I just hope she survives until september so i can get a real daily driver and i can tear off the body and start building her from the ground up.

Yes, a fuel pump can sound exactly like a lifter. If it's leaking gas out the vents it is also leaking into the engine.

Mike

thanks for the info Mike....

it sounded nearly identical to a lifter...

i'll get an oil change done as well
