Hi guys I need some help I have just replaced the pinion seal on the Differential of my 77 Vette and now I need to torque the nut down I have checked in the service manual but they dont have any TORQUE settings on the Differential. Hope you can help . We are doing a ground up restoration and we are now in the process of replacing all the parts on the chassy we posted a few photos when we were stripping the chassy so we will post some new one as we start to assembly the chassy and then its on to the body whish us luck because we will need it as we dont have any one on the Island (ANTIGUA) to help us so its books and you guys /gals that we look to for help.

Thanks again

I think that is in the Chassis Repair Manual since that is a major component rebuild. My neighbor has one and I will check it out and post later. If I remember correctly, the torque is required so as to crush the seal a certain amount.

Differental Torque setting

Thanks much we will greatly appreciate any help you can offer.

I hope you are ready for this. And I quote from the 1973 Chevrolet Overhaul Manual:

"Install a new nut on pinion shaft. Tighten nut to remove end play - conitnue alternatley tightening in small increments and checking preload with torque wrench until torque requred to rotate pinion is 20-30 ub, lbs for new bearings and seal, or 5-15 in. lbs when used parts are reinstalled."

So it looks like this is a completely different nut torque than that required for cars and trucks.

If you want me to scan this from the manual, email me offline and I will take care of it. It is quite a length article.
