I have to TPIS tips book and they state that if you remove the screens in the MAF that the air will flow better. Sounds great but what is the down side to doing this. Anyone have any info or experience on doing this. Thanks
theres two screens FRONT & back the screens tend to prevent damage to the very fragile filiment that heats to measure air flow, the back screen can be removed with no bad effects that Ive ever seen IF YOUR EXTREMELY CAREFUL not to damage the filiment, the front COULD be removed but I tend to leave that one ON as its a last defence from sucking something thru the maf when the engines running that would damage the filiment.(and even small bits of crud can do damage)
BTW
they also suggest removing or cutting down the aluminum fins ..ID advise against that as it tends to shorten the life of the maf as it runs noticably hotter and I think you know what exrtra heat and electronics not designed to run at higher heat ranges tend to do......(GIVE FLAKEY READINGS OR BURN OUT)
been un-screened (both front and rear) for over 20 (ouch - time flies) years now, never any problem traceable to screen absence...maF housing also recontoured in area of screen mounts to reduce resistance to airflow.
screens may provide protection from airborne contaminants that are larger than screen opening, but will not stop oil from k+n filters, etc....theoretically (i hate theories cause so many are 95% wrong --such as you can get pregnant from drinking tequila) the screens may stop airflow from 'vortexing' as it passes thru the maF sensor and the ecm signal output is better (?)
note that i said ''may''--mine runs superb without em and testing was never done to prove any benefits from this surgery either, but when i was 'young and foolish' the 'experts' said to take the screens out (some things have changed since, some have not) and i did
FWIW, from my last scan descreening the MAF does actually improve air flow. I saw a gain of approximately 10 grams/sec. However i think my maf has issues.
I had an '87 years ago and removed the screens and did not have a bit of trouble in the 4 years I had the car. Performance was certainly better. Shaking a few cobwebs loose upstairs I seem to remember that a question came up at an event at BG years ago about that exact subject. The engineers basicly said that the screens are there in the event of a filter failure of some sort. As far as the fins go they are there to prevent failure of the MAF in the event you ran wide open throttle for a period of time and then immediatley shut down without not giving it a few minutes at idle to cool down, an engineering CYA. I think you can still buy them through Mid america or Ecklers with the cooling fins removed as they are restrictive and disrupt air flow.
