Traction control ABS lights on dash came on

When returning from Cruisefest 6, just south of Atlanta, I had to perform a fairly quick stop for a fire truck which was up ahead and suddenly stopped on the inside lane, the truck did not have any lights/siren on. There was no road debris or any accidents.

Anyway after I got back under way my dash had the Traction Control and ABS warning lights on. All the DIC would display was "service traction control." I could get no other indications. I pulled off at the next exit at a fueling place, as I somehow seemed to remember something about shutting down and the errors resetting. I do not know if this is true or not, but in this case it seemed to work the errors went away and the DIC went back to normal display functions. Before shutting it off I did press the Traction button a couple of times in the hopes of maybe cycling through the settings. I seem to remember the default after shut down for the traction control is to be re-enabled.

Anyone out her have some further input on what might have happened? I drove on into Jacksonville and the lights never came back. They are still out now, which is good as far as I am concerned.

I would just like to know what might have caused it in the first place.

C4C5specialist, if you are not to busy and have any ideas I would welcome hearing them. I think something must have happened which caused a couple of bogus error codes to be thrown during the quick stopping.

Thanks

Pseudomind,
Did you stop the car, park it, take the keys out, and leave it be for a while? If so, were the lights still on when you came back and tried starting the car again?

If they were- if this was not a one-time, car is adjusting to a sudden stop condition ABS use- then I would recommend that you try OBTAINING CODES, and seeing if they are currently active or merely history codes.

Let us know what codes you find, as those codes- if present- will help C4C5Specialist diagnose the issue for you a little faster.

No I stopped ,shut it off, locked it up, gassed up, then restarted and pulled car a couple car links forward and parked. When I restarted the lights were out. I did the "lock" routine as for some reason by doing this it will allow my gas door to close without opening the trunk and tugging the lanyard.

I believe someone has posted a traction control reset procedure on the board here. The only thing I can figure is the quick stop on the Interstate, but even at that I did not lock the brakes down (Can you lock the ABS brakes?)or leave any tire rubber in stopping. Just a very quick stop.

Everything seems to be working normally, but I will probably run through the codes this weekend, just for ____ and giggles.

I am still trying to put some faces to pseudonym's, who was "Vanna?" I know it was one of the mod's but which one?

HI there,
I would need the codes from the TCS-28 to let you know what happened further.
Allthebest, c4c5

What is a TCS-28? The scanner assembly you had at CruiseFest?

Patrick,

Are you really from England? Sounded more Bill Clinton from Ar-Kansas twangish to me, or maybe Hillary with her mouth full. ;) :L

What is a TCS-28?

Traction Control System!! You can Check it with your DIC!! :upthumbs

I just ran through the DIC and the only code is this one. The other areas have no codes

28-TCS - Traction Control System 1 code

C1214 H

I checked it twice and it shows as "H," history code reading so what now? I am no longer getting the service traction or ABs lights or errors being displayed

Which according to the DIC Code chart states it is this issue, which I have no idea what it means,

C1214 Sol Valve Relay Contact or Coil CKT Open

Thanks

It is a C5 glitch. Mine does the same thing every once in a while.

Just shut off the car, lock it, unlock it, and restart it.

Howard, not to alarm you, but that is the code that mine also had.
I was getting service active handling/service abs/service traction control messages fairly frequently upon startup.
I had to replace the EBCM- luckily under warranty.

Do you have an extended warranty or are you still under factory warranty?

Tammy

I have the extended unitl 2011 and about 92,000 miles, $200.00 deductible. So far this is the only time it has happened, so I will be watching it.

Ah, that's right, now I remember you telling me. That's good news.

HI there,
Normally, a C1214 will be cause by an intermittant power relay fault within the electronic brake traction control module.
Usually, this is replaced and your problem will be resolved.

I would also suggest looking at the wheel sensors as one might be strating to go bad, the left front going bad is very common. It will cause this same error. I have been down this road myself.

Thanks C4C5Specialist, but just a little clarification if you would.

electronic brake traction control module

Isn't this the $1200.00 to $1500.00 module I believe others have referred to? I would guess it should be a warranty item.

Can there be the possibility that it may be a one time random event? I will keep an eye on it, but knock on wood, it has not happened again. I have driven about 500 miles since it happened, with around 400 of those miles on I-75 and I-10 with a lot of 80+ plus MPH and a good number of jumps up into triple digits thrown in also while returning home.

I guess what I am trying to get some clarification on is if I take it to the dealer and it has the one time C1214 H code, do you think the dealer would replace the module?

Thanks

Probably Not!! It would have to have more events in history!! Mine has done it 2 or 3 times since new!!Every time pulling out of my driveway,Cold!! I've had C5's and C4's trip lights over a dirty wiring plug on speed sensors and the sensor end covered with break dirt on C4's!! Clean and dielectric grease on the wiring plugs,No More Problems!! I've only had change one wheel sensor on a Corvette and that was because of Collision damage !! C5's have the speed sensors built in to the wheel bearings!! I'd just watch it,if it gets to doing it allot take it in!!:upthumbs

Thanks everyone so far for your answers. I have been perusing the GM Service Manual (2003 Z06) and they have a diagram and instructions for removing the electronic brake traction control module. (I myself have no intention of doing this) But, the manual is not clear on exactly where the electronic brake traction control module is located. I am guessing behind the seats underneath the cargo area, may I obtain some clarifaction from someone on the forum for the correct location?

gmjunkie I also found the diagrams of the speed sensor modules. from the way it looks to me one must jack up the car, pull the wheels and then the wheel hubs to get to the electrical connection for the speed sensor. Is this what one has to do to add a dielectric to the connectors?

Definitely easier to remove the wheels, but up on a Hoist you can get to them with out!! I believe the control module is under floorboard Toe panel with the ECM passenger side!! I've never messed with mine!! Bossvette had a problem with his,He cleaned the speed sensor plugs and to my knowledge it fixed it!! Haven't heard anymore about it!! Mine has only done it a couple times, and I didn't let it warm up before I took off!! I just started it and went!!! It wasn't a real cold day but below 50 deg!! Mine tripped a code coming back from BG though, but it was Multiple Mis-Fire G coil!! (Don't know what caused it, it ran alright!! Maybe it got a little damp.I was in a Heck of a Rain!!!!) The light went out before I got home,But the Histroy was still there!!:upthumbs
