Can someone explain how this system works for our cars. I had a BMW that actually reduced engine power when the wheels spun and was quite noticable but this system seems different. I was told that some cars apply rear brake to reduce the spin, but this seems sounds improbable, wouldn t you wear out the brakes in no time?

My understanding is that the traction control cuts engine power, rather than apply brakes. The earlier units on C5's were more obtrusive that the later ones. The later ones appear to me to allow more wheelspin than the early ones. I had a '97 and the traction control was more noticable than on my 2002. You can see when the system becomes active, as it say so on the DIC.

The active handling does selectively apply brakes at one or more wheels to settle the car.

Traction control (TCS) or acceleration slip regulation (ASR, as it was known on C4) has functioned in a similar manner on all Corvettes since the feature was introduced for 1992.

The system has three tiers of intervention. T
1) spark retard.
2) throttle opening reduction
3) rear brake application (below 40mph only)

The severity of the wheel spin and the vehicle speed determines which or which combination of methods is used.

A very general rule is, a little wheel spin and you get spark retard. A little more wheelspin and you get spark retard and throttle opening reduction. A heck of a lot of wheelspin and you get all three but, above 40mph, rear brake intervention is not used under any circumstances.

very interesting, thanks, it would seem if you do a lot of hard 1st gear accelaration you must wear the brakes as the system must be working in that you would certainly spin the tires from a dead stop if the system were deactivated no?

The pulsing of the rear brakes and subsequent wheelhop under hard acceleration is annoying when TCS engages so I don't do it much.

You can shut TCS off by holding down the A/H button for 5 seconds to enter 'Competive Mode', you will still have A/H enabled. ABS cannot be shut off in any mode for safety reasons.

Then you will be spinning your tires in 1st gear a lot, making noise and wearing out $400 tires; people will think you are in your early 2nd childhood as a result...

No, not all have AH. My FRC does not have it, only traction control. Sometime late 99 or 2000 AH became standard equipment.
