1990 with automatic transmission. 55,000 miles.
When I slow to almost a stop, I hear and feel a slight "clunk". I think it's the transmission backing down to 1st gear. What do you think? Trouble. Service or don't fix it till it's broke. I'd welcome opinions

I don't have the answer but I wish someone would. I have the same thing on my '87 with 96K on her.

Take your vetts to good Vett mechanic or very good transmission shop. It could also be the universals
My 90 had 87k on it and I lost 3 and overdrive with no warning in the begining of May. At least change the trany fluid. I had my trany rebuilt by a local performence transmission shop. Peformace clutches, shift kit, Beast shell with 5 planitary gears and 2400 stall converter. Runs great, car pulls all the way through overdrive.

All U-joints are brand new and have been checked to ensure that I didn't get a bad one. Actually, the noise became noticeable after the U-joints were replaced.

I believe you're right though. It's time to have an expert take a peek. You wouldn't happen to know the stall speed of the stock converter, would you?

It costed me $1900.00 with tax. I removed the trany myself. The the break down if I remember correctly trany rebuid was $1200, the beast shell and planitaries $250 converter $300. I had it done at Competition Transmision here in town. These guys build transmisions for drag cars., and they make their own torque converters. http://www.competitiontransmission.com/index.html

Another thing.....

Until I adjusted the transmission/throttle linkage, the torque convertor didn't unlock until I stepped on the brake when backing down. That's not happening anymore. It seems to unlock when I get off the gas.

How's it supposed to be?

Did I (maybe) screw up the adjustment or did I just fix something that I didn't know was broken?;LOL

Mine does this from the downshift from second to first. If thats what you are refering to, don't worry about it. My vette does it as well as my brothers. Is it just on deceleration?

Until I "adjusted" the linkage, it would back down, as though I had downshifted, when I let off the gas and it would do that until I tapped the brakes. Now, when I let off the gas, it just seems like it's in neutral. It doesn't back down noticeably. I believe the torque convertor is unlocking and thus the transmission is sort of freewheeling. I know less than nothing about automatic transmissions.

:confused

I am not sure of your problem. My post was in reference to lwhssh's problem. There was a thread about a little clunk from the automatic downshift from second gear into first. That noise from what I know is somewhat common.

Vettefan,
I think that is exactly it. Maybe I am just obsessing over a noise that I never really noticed before. You do have to listen for it.

Yeah, as long as it isn't making any noises when shifting from like park to drive, or something like that I would not stress over it. Just keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't get any louder.
