Going a Trans service W/Delco Filter and Gasket. Dose anyone know how many qts go back in...with Converter drain out?
I did tap the Converter and put a drain plug last time.
Also who makes the good additave... Lube Guard, Trans Guard.. Lucas, ATP???
Thanks.

When I do a new/remanned trans install, I would put in 4 quarts before starting the motor. Then start in Park and put in 4 more quarts.
The first four quarts will fill the pan and when the motor starts be imediatly drawn up by the pump and deposited in the torque converter. So it is important not dally about after you restart the motor. Put in the second set of 4 quarts and check the dipstick. If it is not yet on the stick add another full quart till it gets on the dipstick. Continue to add by 1/4 quart to the full mark. After you have reached the full mark run the car through the gears and recheck the fluid level. Some of the clutch drums might have drained a bit, and after running through the gears may drop the fluid level a tad.
I am not sure the exact amount you will need but most transmissions will take about 9-10 quarts.
For addatives I usually use Lube Guard.

I allways put oil in a new convertor before starting to drain it and start the car.I would think would greatly shortin the life all those clutch packs turning dry... takes a couple seconds for the oil pump to reach the convertor.......

Thanks for the feed back...don't know if I explaned myself very well. I'm not installing or removing the Trans...just droping the Pan...draining the Converter... and installing a new filter gasket and fluid.
Hmmmm, So how would one add new fluid to a (drained)converter when the tranny is still in the car?

When installing a new converter, I supose it would be a good thing to fill the converter as much as will stay in it before stabbing it onto the trans.
If its already in the car, then there's not much you can do there.
Yes it does take a couple seconds for the pump to flow, but thats about all it takes. I think most pumps flow about one quart per 10-15 sec at idle. So you have just over a minute before the 4 quarts in the pan is emptied.
When I re-build a trans, and I think most builders also, the pump is pre-primed or lubed and all internal parts are prelubed. Also the clutches should not experience any hardship as the there is enough clearances in the clutch packs to allow them to spin rather freely. Hammer down should not experience any new trans/dry startup issues as his unit is already prelubed.
Since HammerDown indicated that he drained the converter with a previously installed plug I assumed it was empty, and that the trans was still installed in the car.

Kudos to you HammerDown on doing that full trans service. Most folks never even think about the tranny untill it starts to act up.

Best thing you can do is keep all your fluid levels full and clean I do mine every 15k sounds like your very thourl in your work thats good Happy Vetting:pat

Got a little messy.

Well that job's done...I pulled just over 9 Qts. out of the Trans pan and Converter. Added the new filter, gasket, fluid W/Lube Guard...and she's shifting happy!
