I have a '79, automatic. 3 or 4 times in the past few weeks my transmission seems to lag when I shift from Park to Drive first thing in the morning. It doesn't happen any other time of the day. When I shift there is a 1 or 2 second pause before it engages (it does . Sometimes my choke doesn't engage in the morning so the engine is idling rough when this "lag" happens. Transmission fluid level seems normal. Is the rough idle causing the tranny to not catch?

I would say, first get your choke and cold rpm right, after that look at the transmission.
As the transmission has a oil pump that is driven by the engine and also engine vacuum is related to the transmission I would first begin at the engine :)

Greetings Peter

Thanks Peter. I didn't realize that the tranny uses engine vacuum. I've been working on replacing all of my vacuum lines - got all the headlights lines done and will tackle the rest soon.

Could be only the lockup tranmissions only used engine vacuum but I don't know that.

Greetings Peter
