Transmission question

I have a 91 coupe with an automatic trans. I don’t care for the shift pattern of this stock set-up. If I get a performance chip will I notice a difference in the shift pattern? Will I need a switch to stop the torque converter from locking up with the chip? Or is that a worthwhile modification? Thanks BamaJohn
