Transmission Selector Problem

I normally just put my 88 in "drive" but was horsing around the other day and decided to run through all the gears. But I couldn't get it into first. The selector showed it between first and second and I couldn't pull the selector any further back. It did shift from first to second so I know it wasn't in first. It looked like maybe the boot was preventing the selector from going all the way back because the front of the boot was stretched to the max. Anybody have this same problem or do I need to adjust the linkage.

Thanks,

Ron

Ron-Your 88 is probably like my 91 auto. You have a Park/Neutral switch attached to the shifter, and if you adjust it forward slightly you should be able to see 1st gear in your shift display. To access switch,on mine, remove the 3 screws hold ths console, pull out cig.lighter ,if equiped,(don't need to remove shift knob)lift up on panel and remove hatch and display light connectors and turn panel sideways which provides plenty of room to work.BTW 2 small bolts hold the switch to the shifter.:)

I have the same problem with my '88. I can't hold it in low gear. Altho I haven't adjusted it yet, I'm assuming that over time the cable has stretched and just needs a quick adjustment.

Thanks Dougs91 but I guess I didn't make my self clear. Not the first time I didn't explain something fully. My problem isn't so much with the gear indicator but that I can't pull the gear selector back far enough to engage only first. I push in the button and pull back as hard as I dare and I still can't select only first. It looks like the front of the boot is holding it from engaging first or maybe I just need to adjust the linkage. Any ideas? I've had the console out a couple of times so now with your help I know how to fix the indicator being slightly off.

Thanks for the help

Or I should understand what I read!! I haven't had that happen yet, only the bad P/N switch. If you've got a Helm's or other manual(I'll check my helm's)there must be a "linkage" or something to adjust?:Roll

I had an 86 and 87 that did the same thing. I just assumed that the shifter boot had tightened up over the years and wouldn't let me pull the shifter all the way back. By the way, I have no problem pulling my 95 into 1st gear. Again I just assumed that the shifter boot had not tightend up yet because all of the shifter parts look the same.

1st Gear

Inability to pull an auto into first gear is 'common'
There were several threads on this about a year + ago. Most agreed the boot was the culprit and loosening its retaining ring solved the problem. Try a 'search' on the tab above for 'boot first gear'.

At the front base of the shifter is an adjustment like the one out under the hood but you have to get to it.R&R time.:(
