Hi Everyone
I recently changed the fluid and filter in my auto tranny. I drove the car aroung for a couple hours everything was fine. Then I stopped at a store, come back to the car and it doesn't shift out of second gear. Take off and it shifts hard out of first and gets to second and that as far as it goes. If I let off the gas pedal it coasts. Any advise would be very much appreciated. Is the tranny going to hell or what.
Thank-you

HI there,
It sounds to me like your governor in the tailshaft housing might have a stripped gear on it.
I dont think you did anything to cause this, as this is a known issue for early 700-R4 automatic, which is in your car.
if you look at the drivers side of the trans, under a round dome cap, that is pressed into the side of the case. Use a brass drift, and a hammer, to pop the cover off. Underneath the cover will be a steel weight type assembly.
If you are careful, slide out the governor, and see what the fibre gear, at the end, looks like.
My guess, is that this is worn, and will require replacement.
You can get the gear separately, however, depending on your mileage, you may just want to change the entire assembly, just to be sure that there is no sticking.
All the best, c4c5:hb

Check the adjustment on your Throttle Valve (TV) Cable,
you my have damaged the bracket,or repositioned it ,same happened to me.

Thanks for the info. Car has 80k on it and was working fine. I'll crawl under it tomorrow and see what I can see. Hopefully it's an easy fix. If not it's time to get the books out.

Thanks Again
Dave

Proper Positioning Of Parts

Start the car up, and let it sit there. You don't have to drive around for this test. Once you let the car sit and idle... say, 4/5 minutes, pull the Trans dip stick. Are there bubbles all up and down the dip stick where the fluid is? If this is the case, you don't have the filter/rubber seal positioned correctly. You are sucking air, and this will cause poor shifts, to no shifts. Pull the pan....you know the rest. Since you stated that everything was fine before the oil change, I hope it's that simple for you.
