Does anyone know what the engines designations mean. Not that L-88 is a 427, or LT-1 is a solid lifter 350, but what does each digit mean? As an example, does "L" always mean engine? If it does then what about the "Z" in Z/28?

I always thought that "L" was for the engine, "M" for the tranny, "Z" for special options, "B" for paint, etc. Not 100% sure, though.

Stallion's correct - Chevrolet grouped options by letter to keep the releasing and ordering systems organized, and all engine options were under "L", special performance packages (like Z/28, which included many items in addition to the engine) under "Z", etc.
