been trying to find a way to keep my (84)antenna up at shows so I can put a flag on it when the key is off,the only way I know is to find the power wire to it and put in a switch.will this harm the antenna motor?or has anyone done this before.and does anyone know where the power wire is?
I am not 100% sure about this but there could be two possible ways to achieve what you want. From installing a CD player in my vette, i know that their is a power antenna wire on the wiring harness from the car. The CD player i intalled had the option for a power antenna so the two harnesses worked ok. Also you can get to the antenna motor power wire from under the rear fender. I am not sure on the color codes. It might be a toss up as far as which way you want to go at it. From behind the radio, or at the motor itself.
You do have a stock radio dont you?
I will try to look up some wiring diagrams, if you try anything keep us posted.

o.k.got the vette out today and took the radio out to find the yellow ant. wire, found it and cut it,the ant.did not go up when I turn it on,so that`s the wire right?touched the wire together and the ant started to go up,took the wire apart and it stopped just like I wanted, took the wire apart so no juice to it,turned the key off and the ant. went down..went to the back of the car, under the drivers side rear, found the ant.and the two wires running into it,cut the one wire, turned the key on,no power to the ant.thats the one I want, touched them together and it went up,took the apart, turned the key off and the ant went back down.,Now I think that when you take power from something it should not work.this did.......
You are on the right track...but... The wire you are 'playing with' is not the power supply, it is the wire that tells the antenna to be up or down. This is the one that comes from the radio.
If you want to make the antenna fully manual, all you would need to do is send the same signal (that the radio does) to the antenna (i don't know what the heck it sends, someone help here). If you want it semi-manual, then the job will be more tricky because you need to include the radio in the loop as well, and be sure not to fry anything.
what most people want is to have control of their antenna to put it down (for listening to CD's , or otherwise) so all you would need to do there is cut the wire you are playing with already and add a simple on/off switch to it.
I hope I helped to shed some light on the subject for you...
I think that there should be three wires going to the antenna. One of them should be orange which is always hot (12v). When the radio is turned on it switches power into the antenna through a different wire. When the antenna relay senses power from the two sources the antenna goes up. When the car or radio is turned off then the relay on has power from one source and it goes down. Find the orange wire - put in a switch and you've got it whipped.
