Any one run a turbo charger?? I was reading some old literature on the late 70's vetts they say alot of people opted to go with turbo chargers for an inexpenceive way to get good HP gains. So Im trying to seem what all it would intal to put a turbo on my '81 350. Does any one have this set up?? What aftermarket kits are out there and is it worth the investment ?? I looked threw Jegs / Summit alls I really see in there are supercharges and they are probably more then I would like to spend , and I dont really want a big blower coming threw the hood.

I have 2 turbochargers on my small block.

What you are referring too is probably the single turbo kits like the ones that were available from Martin. They use a crossover exhaust from one side w/ a Y-section on which the turbo mounts. There's also a hat over the carburetor.

It looks like this but this one has a centrifugal blower.

These kits are probably not available anymore, maybe on ebay (I've seen a few pop up there). The only kit I now of is the banks stuff ( http://www.bankspower.com ) and they're for twin turbocharged applications.

What units are you using ? It looks like a nice set up. Did you get a significant gain in power ??

all you see there is not mine, I have 2 T04B S-4 .60AR turbochargers. My engine isn't completely finished yet, I hope to finish it in the next month or so.

The turbo's I have are good for about 600Hp a piece.

what kind of price for the turbo pack and is it complete? can anyone install it and how easy is it to install?

You'd have to ask Banks what it would cost, mine is not off the shellf stuff. It's all custom one off stuff. As for installation, well bolting stuff on isn't that hard but you have to install intercoolers, lower the compression of your engine, install a suitable cam, strengthen the bottom end, tune the whole system, use a boost timing retard of some sort and lots lots more. It's certainly not easy and not cheap at all.

A supercharger is a whole lot more easier to install and it's cheaper too.

Well, ATI or Vortec for centrifugal units. They can be bought directly from them or from Suiit, Jegs, PAW and the likes.

I definitely would take a turbo over a SC any day.

Why? Because turbos build unbelievable torque down low in the rpm range. Of couse this all depends on cam, turbo, turbo controls etc.

For exampe LS1 motorsports just release a turbo kit for the F-bod. The single turbo made over 650fllbs of torque AT THE WHEELS. This was all produced in the lower rpm range. I am talking stop light to stop light torque that you would use!

But there is no arguing the complexity of producing, tuning and controlling a turbo system. The Centr. blowers are defintely a nice bolt on deal. Not much to them. There are kits now for carbuerated systems. The produce great top end power but don't make the low end torque a properly setup turbo system could.;)

Here are some links to the Centri SC
Vortech and ATI produce the best quality/cost systems out there right now.

centrifugals don't make lots of low end but roots & screws certainly do.

Doubt they will compete with a turbo system.

Roots and Screws provide more linear boost/ power increases. i.e. you'll see boost below 3K rpm unlike centri. blowers.

Roots are really adiabatic inefficient. The are usefull but not when you start going to the higher boost ranges. I would only use a roots blower when I am looking for some descent gains, not pushing the envelope.

Screws are higher up in the adiabatic range (65-70% vs roots ~50%). You could run more boost while being able to keep the temps down and avoid pre-ignition. BUT once you start going up in the rpm range the mechanical efficiency of the screw type starts to become detrimental.

roots are not pressure pumps at all, they are air pumps. They do not create pressure.

I agree though, it's hard to beat a turbocharger, that's why I went for that :)

sorry positive displacement pumps

I like centri blowers because of the high adiabatic efficiency and easy bolt on ability.

In fact on paper I have a bit of a dream. I my dream car is a first gen camaro. (hence sscam69=1969 Super Sport Camaro actually like 67 or 68 just love the curves). 502 producing over 600ftlbs in the lower rpm range 2k-4krpm and hooking up the Vortech carbuerated blower for the top end. I hope to see 50% increase in power on the top end with about 5#'s of boost.

But its just on paper right now.

Shooting for a low 10 high 9sec streetable (i.e. can be used everyday) car. The cubes make it easy. The hard part is the traction LOL

Wow, a 69 camaro SS w/ a fuel injected, twin turbocharged 434 SBC is my dream car. I hope to make it reality some day. To complement the engine it has to have a rack&pinion steering setup w/ tubular A-arms, koni shocks, IRS and big brakes. Only one thing holding my dream back.. CASH :D I'm always short on that stuff ;)

My next big purchase will be a T-76 turbo. I built my motor for this turbo. I have a friend who used to run a modified T-76 on a 383 SBC in his 72 Roadster. It ran a best of 5.99 @ 117 MPH in the 1/8th mile.

He now runs a 572 CI motor with no turbo. Below is a picture of his car with turbo back in August of last year.

It's hard to beat a turbocharger.

Twinnie we have very similar dreams!! We're both short on the same stuff:L:L

I was thinking the same thing for the rest of the car

Mods
-Baer brakes w/ slotted rotors
-Solid axle w/ 3.73
-TKO 5 speed built of course
-Autometer Phantom guages
-Black on black w/ 2" cowl
-Torque thrust II's w/ mini-tub in the back
-Black grill w/ hideaway lights
-True dual exhaust with X to flows dumped
-Rollcage (black of course)

all this equals to one bad mutha! Damn you got my heart racing now!!

Gwhite75:eek:eek is all I have got to say!!!

I've seen that engine before on the CorvetteForum (is it okay to mention that site here???) am I right?
