Turn out the lights

I'm a relatively new and first time owner of a lovely beige 81 coupe. It's a real beauty. After sitting for a month or so without being used, I found the battery dead. After replacing the battery, I immediately noticed that the interior overhead and lower courtesy lights would not shut off after turning off the engine and closing the doors. Is there some cause-effect relationship with changing the battery that I'm not aware of or is it possibly some problem with the light switch (that maybe killed the battery in the first place.) Nothing happens when I push in the door jam switch---that is, the lights won't go off.
I'd welcome advice. Thanks. Jupiter

If your headlight switch is turned all the way in one direction, the interior lights will stay on.:beer

Thanks, I've tried that and it doesn't seem to be the problem.

I'm sure you have thought of this, but there is a 25 or so second delay after you shut the doors before they go off.

there is a timer(not sure where) in the vette that turns the lites off after 15 sec..if this doesn't work, you may have to invest in a disconnect switch for the battery, its cheap insuranceespecially if you don't have a battery charger with you

Right, I've outwaited the time delay and and they're not turning off. What's the deal with the disconnect switch for the battery? How does it work? Where is it located? Is it easily available and easily installed or is it a piece of work? Thanks

Pull the glove box out. There's an orange colored thing plugged into the wiring harness to the right of the opening. That's the timer. Might just be hanging there. At least it's there in my 79s. I found a replacement on Ebay, used but like new and cheap. Think Lectric Limited has them.

they are not expensive, look at summit racing supplies, pace performance,...etc just put "battery disconnect" into their search on their home page. not too hard just cut batt wires where you want switch and insert
mike

The disconnect for the battery is just an on-off knob that installs between the neg. cable and the battery. Simple to install and good insurance.

any of the corvette parts places have them...10-15 bucks

Thanks to all of you who weighed in. I've got the disconnect switch installed at the battery now, works fine and is a welcome addition.
