just for the hell of it i started thinking of fitting twin turbos to my 78 L82,

the other night, after seeing how the new mazda r8s are doing it.

has anyone had a go at this and has it been successful.

just wondering . regards ernie.

Are you prepared to break the bank?? It's not cheap and takes a lot of customizing, you will need to rebuild and beef up the entire engine if you want to run any significant levels of boost, turbos alone will not get you there. You need some kind of special exhaust setup, down pipes, waste gates, a blow off valve, some kind of oiling system, an intercooler, piping, a retard system for the ignition...and so on..and so on

As awesome as that Banks kit looks, there are no intercoolers on it.

quote:
The efficiency of the compressor design helps to reduce inlet air temperatures to acceptable levels, eliminating the need for an intercooler.

That of course is partially BS, the intake charge will always get hot because of heat transition through the cartridge (the bearing section on the turbocharger) and because air forced through a restriction gets hot too, so without an intercooler you can not run as high a boost level as with one.

Of course, on a motor like that, it's the 'doing' itself that is priceless. The only thing I think that would top that is a gas turbine--seems to me someone did build a gas turbine 'vette in the 70's--anybody have that article?

I kinda remember something about a 60-ish or early 70-ish Dodge (dart maybe?) or something similiar that had a turbine engine in it. It was only a prototype though (obviously). Supposedly, if it was sitting at idle, the hot exhaust (aimed down) would melt the asphalt street. Also, I remember something about the car's performance, cuz the engine was spinning so incredibly fast. (gyroscope effect or something?)

I think there was a Steve McQueen movie or something about it.
