Okay, I know this is a huge can of worms, but I thought I would try it anyway. What is your fream engine for the C3? A big block? Small block? GenII or Gen III small block? Let your imagination run wild! My only stipulation is that it be fuel injected. But if you were starting from nothing, which route would you go and why? I will post this in the engine section as well. Thanks!

Why dream- build it. Works for me. 383+ BB Power in a SB or 454+ BB.

:cool

I would LOVE to have: All aluminum mountain motor (around 500 cubes would work)with side mount blower or twin turbos. Big shot of nos. All polished. Red/blue fittings on braided stainless. NIIIIIICE!!!

How about the new ZL1 crate engine? Pricey, but closer to historical accuracy :) Fuel injected and all.

Where can one get one's hands on one of these (man, a lot of one's)? I had heard rumors of such a crate motor, but never much more than speculation. I would hate to see the pricetag on that! As for Merlin's 522, what a lovely piece. I don't want to cut the hood, but his even looks good with the hole! Anyway, I would probably do something along the lines of a ZL1 had I the cash, but it's just more of a starting point right now. :beer

I like a nice new LS6. Nice power, modern tech, love the look, and very upgradable.

I think the price I heard was "approximately $20k" for the ZL1 crate engine (that was back in November). I haven't really been paying too much attention to the status, so I don't know if these were already sold out, are available, or haven't yet been released.

The new ZL1 aluminum block, itself, is available for $5200-$5800, depending on the dealer. You could get one of those and put whatever components you wanted into and onto it. There's more information on the GM Performance Parts website.

Yeah, I like that new crate motor too. The pics I saw were real sharp. I really dig the valve covers and other parts they showed it dressed up in. It looked ready to drop into a show car.

The WHOLE reason I BOUGHT the heap...

Was to be a host for the ULTIMATE MILL....

Merlin Aluminum Super Deck Block, Displacement between 10-12L
(615-730 CID)

Big Chief Style Pontiac heads, Dart, Merlin or Canfield, 340cfm+ intake runners

Lunati or Canfield Rotating Assy with full strength Steel or H Beam design Titanium Rods; 10.5:1 CR

Full Roller Valve Train, Solid Roller Lifter (looking at several main grind designs)

Quiet Gear Drive if Compatible with particular Solid Roller

Possibly Fuel Injected

MORE Possibly Forced Induction

Normally aspirated: 900ft-lbs (2000-5000)/750HP (3500-5500)
Forced:1100ft-lbs (2500-5000)/1250HP (4000-6000) (9PSI/9:1CR)

Useful Redline: 6500 Peak Redline: 6750-7000

The engine actually weighs less than an iron SBC....unless blown

Price: $10-12.5K Normal; $15K FI; $22.5 Forced

Building THIS engine, and ONLY this engine was the ONLY reason I ever bought my overpriced "host" in the first place!

Now, if only I can finish the last $12-15K in preps and finally get to IT!!!

Wayne, sounds like a killer setup! Are you doing the work yourself, or is someone else putting it together? I think the field has been narrowed to an aluminum BBC or the LSx of the modern cars. I am actually leaning more towards the BBC because I have already gone the "modern" engine route with the car I have now. It was fun, but maybe it's time for something a bit different. Good luck with your project, and keep us updated!

Bryan

Well, fortunately....i am experiencing my dream motor right now (just did a build up on it) . If i had to pick another for my street Vette, id look seriously at the ZZ572 Crate which is out now.
